Saw this last night. It’s a book I have read a number of times and I am always worried it won’t have justice done to it. I needn’t have worried as I thought this was an excellent evening out at the theatre. I found Spall rather engaging as Atticus Finch and although he was rather aggressive at times in the delivery of his lines I felt he took on the role admirably. Sets always catch my eye and as wonderful as it is, I felt the constant moving it around was a bit distracting at times: table in, table out, chair on the table, chair off the table, doors brought down, doors sent up. Other than that I thought this was an all round good evening

After much hmming and aahing about booking to see this (I had been put off seeing anything at the theatre after the debacle that was Cock) I finally went to see this this afternoon: I really didn’t take to the adults playing children angle at first, and they just seemed to be dumping reams of exposition at the audience to let you know who is who and what they do in town (and Dills performance seemed to be levelled at a regional panto performance of Peter Pan at times in the first act) but thankfully it picked up a lot after the first half hour or so.
I read the book while I was in junior school and think I saw the Gregory Peck film at about the same time (about 40 years so forgive an old codger for having foggy memories) so didn’t remember much beyond the characters names (and Boo Radley):I think maybe the run time could have been trimmed in places but I thought Rafe Spall was really good in the lead, once the trial finished I think the ending lost its way a bit but overall a solid 8 out of 10 from me.

I saw it on a £15 front row rush seat. The stage is very high, it has been raised and it was higher than my head when I was sitting. Regardless, front row with full view of actors' facial expression would be my first choice any time.
The play - I was not looking forward to it, I love the book too much and I had low expectations of how such a beautiful narrative can be adapted to the stage. I was pleasantly surprised at the first half but my predictions came true on the second half.
The first half moved along nicely, it seemed to get in the main events well and it was even good to see a slightly different presentation of Aticus compared to the book. He wasn't the passive character I remember and it did the play good.
However the second part seemed to be paced badly. The court scene was too long and added not a lot extra - most of it was repetition of stuff already known. After the case concluded, there seemed to be a lot of short 'wrapping up the events' type of conversation, which somewhat dragged. And the very last bit, one of the most pivotal to the story, was staged badly. I could hardly make out what happened even though I know the story inside out.
I don't regret seeing it, of course, and my partner who has never read the book, enjoyed it more that I did.

The actor usually playing Bob Ewell was on for Atticus yesterday. Would have loved to see that given how different the characters are to portray!

A solid and well-staged adaptation of the novel. Enjoyable but with no surprises. Well acted, despite Rafe Spall being absent tonight - strangely, no announcement seems to have been made.
Note to self: do not buy tickets in the Upper Circle at the Gielgud, vertigo-inducing.

Rafe was on tonight. His Atticus is obviously quite a departure from the book/film (or at least what I remember of them) and it didn’t quite work for me. A bit too loud and aggressive, whereas the character’s power has always been in his calmness. Very much felt like he was playing lots of the lines for laughs - again, didn’t quite work for me because there’s a real rhythm and natural wit to Sorkin’s dialogue (in everything he does) which I felt Rafe’s delivery lost somewhat.
Like others, I was sceptical going in of the kids being played by adults but actually I thought it worked really well. Adjusted to it immediately.
Liked the set very much and some of the supporting cast were great. But having not read the book/seen the film for years since I was a kid, I was quite struck at how clunky a lot of it felt, at least with slightly older ears. Might have to revisit them and think more about how my opinion’s changed!
Was in Row G All Rise seats tonight - can’t argue at all with £15!

I was there too tonight, and I must say I thought it was riveting. I knew it would be good but I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. Some lovely performances, especially liked Pamela Nomvete and Lloyd Hutchinson. The standout for me was Harry Redding as Jem. He was terrific. What a professional debut! We'll be hearing a lot more from him.

Yes, he's Patrick O'Kane, a great Northern Irish actor. Saw him in Hamlet years ago at the Lyric in Belfast.

Has a playtext been published for this? I forgot to look when I was at the theatre and I can’t find it on Amazon.

Was able to get rush tickets at around 4pm for this evening's performance (row J, stalls).
We had the 2nd understudy for Tom Robinson, Itoya Osagiede, who was great. I think this might have been his first performance? Or, at least, the cast were oddly supportive of him during the curtain call and he seemed to really appreciate it (hugging him, cheering him, looking really happy for him!) Or perhaps he just hasn't performed the role in a while? Not sure, but it was lovely to see.
The entire cast were pretty amazing, wasn't a weak performance among them. Gwyneth Keyworth is shockingly good, as are the other two "kids".
Audience were annoying... I've never heard so much coughing during a performance before. We then had a party arrive 30 minutes late, thinking it started at 19:30 (although them arriving at 19:30 would have still made them late...). They were the row behind me and then some of them started to open CRISP PACKETS?! I very nearly turned around and said "you were late by 30 minutes and disturbed the entire audience and now you're sitting there eating crisps out of a bag?" but alas...
Half of the audience also decided to boo Patrick O'Kane, who played Bob. Found it odd... only ever seen it in pantomime, booing the villain...

Got a rush ticket for this today - £15 for row B 8 Dress. Very happy with that. It’s a strong adaptation and the performances all good - once I’d adjusted to the accents of the ‘adults-playing-kids’.
Glad I caught it. I can’t imagine the apparently-flashier and louder performance Rafe Spall gave - Richard Coyle is so perfectly understated.

I wonder who's replacing Richard Coyle as Atticus? I'd like to see them go for another Coupling actor and go for Ben Miles or perhaps a bigger name like Richard Madden?
