Heading back to this tonight. First time since the cast change. Looking forward to seeing Ashley as Billy and I’m intrigued to see how Lulu is playing the role especially given the mixed (mainly negative) reports on here. Shame Clare Halse isn’t on as she’s been the highlight of the show for me on my previous two visits, but I’m looking forward to seeing Hannah’s take on Peggy

This kind of thing is why I love theatre! I read about this - surely Mamma Mia would have 2nd covers for Donna if lead or first cover was off, plus wouldn't the Lady in question have still been needed to be on stand by for 42nd Street.

I read about this - surely Mamma Mia would have 2nd covers for Donna if lead or first cover was off, plus wouldn't the Lady in question have still been needed to be on stand by for 42nd Street. It was Sara's (lead Donna) scheduled show off and Caroline (alternate) was on, Caroline got injured during the show and although I believe Tash was still in the building (she performed her usual track during the matinee - at least I think she did) they got Steph over instead. Putting Tash on would have meant the ensemble being short whereas 42nd Street had enough covers/swings to cover even if Steph had been needed. As for the show itself I enjoyed it and the new cast were great. I'm especially glad I got to catch Hannah as Peggy, I'll admit I was slightly disappointed when I realised Clare was off as I didn't think anyone else could live up to her performance but Hannah was incredible. Can't say I'm fully convinced by Lulu's performance, overall it was okay I'm not against seeing her in that role again but some of the songs just didn't sit right with me.

I am still putting off booking this because of Lulu. Any news on a replacement?

I am still putting off booking this because of Lulu. Any news on a replacement? Despite potentially becoming a hated member on the board, I've heard murmorings she will be extending a month or two more, to get through the Summer, with Lulu being the one wanting to stay. Obviously still nothing is comfirmed, but with her leaving date looming it won't be surprising to see this happen.

Well I am sure some people like her. Actually when we were in London last week we saw Lulu at stage door as my partner is a real fan of hers. We just made it as we had just seen Chess . Lulu was really lovely to him and even took a photo with his phone of them both from her car. So she did at least appreciate her fans.

Really don't understand why people on here hate Lulu so much, I consider her a real trouper, she's a great singer and for us she was the star of the show. I hope I have that much vigour and energy when I'm 69!!!

This kind of thing is why I love theatre! Great story but I'm somewhat disappointed that they chose not to call her a "super trouper" though.

I don't hate Lulu, in fact I've always quite liked her. Just don't think she suits this show at all.

This kind of thing is why I love theatre! I don't understand how a performer can leave their current job to help out at their previous place of employment? I know it's not the same thing but an employee at Asda couldn't just run over to Tesco to help out if they were a person down. I'm genuinely interested how things like this work if anyone has the answers.

Article in the Telegraph explains what the situation was - DSM's (deputy stage manager) talking to each other! www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/06/08/mamma-mia-understudy-theatre-next-door-steps-save-show/

I don't understand how a performer can leave their current job to help out at their previous place of employment? It happens. Something similar happened to me once: a former manager who'd moved on to a different company paid my employer for some of my time so I could work on a project for him at the new company he worked for.

I agree with theatremadness the way the articles (and tweets) read it sounds like it was a decision made by the stage/deputy managers. I guess no one wants to see another cancel a performance and refund those in attendance if it can be helped. For those who don't regularly go to the theatre the experience of a cancelled performance could put you off seeing other shows, if 42nd Street could help keep that performance of Mamma Mia going not only does it give them good press but it also keeps good relations between the stage managers and you never know when the favour may need to be repaid.

Maria Coyne did this recently I believe, leaving Wicked to go over to Standby at Phantom, yes ok she didn’t go on but same principle that Wicked let her go and cover! It’s great seeing shows supporting each other!

Jeremy Secomb also covered the Phantom for a couple of days a year or so ago. Appreciate it's different because both shows are Cam Mack, but still impressive that they'll allow a lead actor out to cover another show!

It has happened on Broadway where someone appears in one show but understudies another where but nothing beats Cynthia Nixon who did two plays on Broadway at the same time when she was 18.

I would have thought Mamma Mia would have had a 2nd understudy available unless she was on holiday. Good job Steph could remember the role too as actors must blank out some roles or otherwise they would go stir crazy. Imagine an RSC leading performer with all those texts going through their head.

I had the privilege to sing in concert with lulu last year and was a bit in ore of her ..... but must say seeing her sound check then rehearse with her boy can she still sing live .... and was so generous with her time giving advice encouragement .... must say she was lovely a star in the best sense ... a diva ... but nice with it too Really don't understand why people on here hate Lulu so much, I consider her a real trouper, she's a great singer and for us she was the star of the show.
