Jeremy Secomb also covered the Phantom for a couple of days a year or so ago. Appreciate it's different because both shows are Cam Mack, but still impressive that they'll allow a lead actor out to cover another show! It was also different because Secomb was one of the leading men in Les Mis, and they still let him go over to Phantom. Parry doesn't perform unless she's on for Lulu or Jasna, so it didn't really effect 42nd Street as much in that sense.

Steph Parry taking over as Dorothy Brock full-time from July 9th apparently! Lovely story!

I wonder if they will get a new standby? I think, unfortunately, the move away from star casting suggests this great show is coming towards the end of its run.

I haven't been counting, but others have, and tonight is the 500th performance.
Just imagine how many individual taps Clare Halse must have done since opening night. I'm exhausted just thinking about it!

Perhaps paying a "star" like Lulu hasn't really put the bums on seats they thought? I have always said the ensemble is the star of 42nd St ….and Clare Halse!
The understudy taking over the leading role is bit like art imitating life imitating art!!

Absolutely wonderful news. Will definitely be going to see her! Press release I love this press release! Glad to see Steph get lead, can't wait to go and see her in the role. Intrigued as to whether they'll bring in a new standby or just promote the second covers to 1st and get others in the company to also become understudies for the roles

The understudy taking over the leading role is bit like art imitating life imitating art!! It seems to be a tradition for the show so it can play on the publicity. They did it with Peggy Sawyer in the original London production, first with Barbara King replacing Clare Leach and then with Catherine Zeta Jones replacing Barbara King, making a big deal of the "stepping into the lead role so the show could go on" aspect while quietly glossing over the fact that of course they had because that was their job. (Though I can't complain too much, as it was the reporting of the first of those changes that drew my attention to the show in the first place and resulted in my first ever West End musical.)

Hope that's wrong, best show in town! I am thrilled for Steph. I hated Lulu and made no bones about it. Her acting was ok but her voice for me just ruined those songs, I tried to give her a fair chance but she just never did it for me. With regard to coming off in October, you may be correct. The booking run was only ever extended to Oct 20th and looking at the website that is still the case. It would be nice if it saw Christmas and the New Year our though, which it just might. Either way it has ran far longer than anyone thought it would especially looking back to the early posts on here.

500 Performances is a good milestone and if it runs another 4 months or so will have had a very good run. I'd imagine the show has fairly high overheads given the size of the cast and the backstage support they would need so it may have a high break even figure per week.

They should ask Catherine Zeta Jones to come back to close the show as Dorothy in a nice circular touch for the show. I'm sure she'd be thrilled if she was asked.
If she could move her face to show us that she was thrilled of course.

I wonder if a final extension will happen as I imagine RUG don’t want to have a dark theatre over Christmas and New Year

I heard they were looking to extend until January but whether that actually ends up happening is anyone's guess.

I've heard it will close between January and March next year, which would fit the renovations.
Lord, if you close Kinky Boots, Dreamgirls and 42nd Street on the same day I swear to god...!

I honestly could not deal with this closing the same day as Kinky and Dreamgirls, how am I supposed to go to the closing performance of both 42nd Street and Kinky?! It can close on any date other than 12th January, I mean I'd rather not see it close but we all know it has to happen

I hope they keep 42nd Street running until next year. The only thing to be thankful for is it’s designed to tour.
Will all depend on what loses the least money - keeping the show going with the final cast or absorbing the costs of a dark theatre.

Christmas is a very lucrative period, it'd be better to close it in a quieter period.

If it gets through the autumn then letting it run through Xmas would make sense as that would be lucrative. Plus they might just do a long closing notice on it - give people time to see it but make them think I need to see it before it closes.

Just to say that not only do I have a ticket for 42nd Street in Stalls A0 on Saturday evening 20 October 2018, the end of the current booking period, but I also have one for Stalls A23 on Saturday evening 1 December 2018m which was from a booking extension available for a short while in January 2018. As both of these date were announced by the RUG as closing dates for the show I will be a far from happy bunny if the actual closing date turns out to be something else, which is looking like a distinct possibility right now!
