Same here. So excited for this.
Good to see that there’s singing in the trailer, so it’s clear that this is a musical.
Bit disturbed by the perm though!

Oh good lord... crying again. This show ruins me.
Looks fantastic. Counting the days to watch it.

It is what I believe the kids call a ‘Jewfro’; not dissimilar to my own in early years....

I just re-watched the trailer. Despite the dodgy perm, I'm pleased that even in the trailer that the familiar Ben Platt quirks and facial expressions have been captured.

Would’ve swapped a kidney to see Ben as Evan onstage and his voice will always be the definitive Evan, but to me he looks just too old in the trailer. I know it’s ‘his role’ and he owns the film rights but maybe an actual teen would’ve been more believable as someone who would’ve got sucked into the deception Evan finds himself in? As an obvious adult whose cousin, Connor and love interest look younger than him, Evan begins to looks less vulnerable and awkward an, I don’t know...more...sinister? As the subject matter is darker I don’t think we can compare it to frothy silliness like Grease and Glee where the whole cast look the same age and you can suspend disbelief. Don’t think the nerdy perm/polo shirt combo helps tbh. This opinion is based on the trailer alone, I hope the film as a whole convinces more.
Side note: I know it’s a given that most people who will be interested in the film will know the plot from the musical but the trailer was basically the story start to finish? What room is there left for surprise?
In comparison the recent trailers for In the heights and West Side Story look fresh and exciting.

Y'all are so starved for theatre content to think this bland trailer is any good. And are we really not going to talk about how Ben Platt looks like my aunt if she was a lesbian in the '80s?

I'm glad they've cast Ben Platt. If they had made a Wicked film earlier, I'd have loved them to cast Idina Menzel and Kristen Chenoweth. The original stage performance can now be captured.
Also for complaints of looking old, some people clearly haven't seen Grease!

No, nobody has mentioned ‘Grease’ at all 😂

Just because Grease was particularly bad for adult highschooler syndrome doesn't mean criticism of that here is suddenly pointless or invalid. And like someone else said this is supposed to be a proper serious film compared to the camp and silly Grease so it's far more jarring here. Ben Platt was literally playing a college student almost a decade ago so to be playing a high schooler at nearly 30 (and really looking it) is kind of ridiculous. Hopefully it'll be easier to adjust to in a full film.

The wig department alone have managed to succeed in making a fairly young looking 27 year old look in his mid thirties. Why didn’t they stick with his original Evan cut I’ll never know. That wig is...a choice.

They get stick for casting Platt. They'd have had stick for not casting him as he originated the role. Is it too much to wait to actually see the film before ripping into how he looks? I couldn't care less about his bloody hairline. Can he still sing? As far as I know, yes he can. That is all that matters.

Well, colour me naive but the first thing I thought when I watched the trailer wasn’t “he looks too old and that’s a bad wig” it was “doesn’t he look very slight and vulnerable”. But then I’m all for Glenn playing Norma in the film 😀

Why do you need to see the full film to be able to talk about what he looks like? Its not as if hes going to look any different in the film, compared to the trailer.

I still stand by what I've always said about this: 27 is pretty standard casting in American TV and film for a teenage role.
Yes, Platt does look a bit older than most 27 year-olds but I don't think it's THAT jarring. I think maybe because people already knew his age going in, they went looking for signs of it, whereas if he was a total unknown most probably wouldn't have noticed.
It's also good to see a hit musical take its original star to the big screen, something theatre fans have been crying out to see more of for years!

I'll admit to being a biased source because I think the score is so repetitive and sounds like Christian pop music and so I don't have any actual interest in seeing this in any form so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

This may have been raised before but why no midweek matinee anymore?

A lot of shows seem to be dropping the midweek matinee and doing Sunday performances instead.

Hollyoaks used to film about six to eight weeks in advance of transmission, unless that has changed following the covid break. If it hasn't then he'd have been filming since just after easter so even if he had a six month contract then he'd still be free in time for the DEH reopening.
