No way, he's got the classic leading man look and far too physically developed and athletic for this.

Maybe also Sam Lupton? Who was great in Little Shop a couple of years ago (if that?)

Does anyone remember the hype around Next To Normal, which I think was a similar level hit on Broadway a few years back? Everyone was convinced it would run for years and come to London, but once its original cast had left sales slowed down and the 'next big thing' came along, and the transfer never happened for whatever reason. Not saying it's the same for this, but in my mind the show had a similar vibe and fan base, quite an American centric plot and the same sort of buzz. Discuss! Even thought Next to Normal recouped, it wasn’t a money spinner, it was more of a critical hit. The problem with N2N is that it is owned by David Stone who pretty much owns Wicked and he won’t release the rights, despite various theatre companies requesting this. However N2N will come to London in probably 10 yeas time, David will get someone like the Menier to do it, with an eye on a Broadway revival, it may then go into the West End. DEH, like Anastasia are both graphic driven shows, which is expensive to develop, but you only have to do it once. so any further production is going to be lot less than a conventional show, as I mean you bring most of the show over from New York on a USB stick. So DEH is going to happen in the West End and Anastasia is a good bet. Also Waitress and Come From Away are going to come over.

Without stating the obvious, I think if it does come over here, the producers are going to have to be very careful about who they cast in the lead. I absolutely love the score and every clip I've seen with Ben Platt in it, but had the misfortune of seeing the show with Noah Galvin in the lead last week and, in my opinion, he really wasn't up to the role in any way shape or form. Without a strong Evan, the whole piece becomes far less involving and I was absolutely shocked to find myself getting bored at certain times during the show.
Noah Galvin's portrayal of Evan was basically one-note incorporating constant tic-ing,gurning,stammering, hand-wringing and contorting his body. There was no nuance or light/shade in his performance, which made the romance between him and Connor's sister completely unbelievable. Also he looked far younger than all his peers, which didn't help.
For me, the stand-out performance was Mike Faist (Connor) with 'Sincerely Me' being the only number where the show really came alive. Even Evan's Mum's eleventh hour lament went for nothing, as Noah G didn't seem to have any idea how to react to her words. It just shows that however great a show can be, a misstep in casting can really undermine the whole production.

I just saw a video of an understudy Evan (not sure which one, I believe there are at least two) and it took me a while to get into it. For starters he just seemed too fit, healthy and had a somewhat of an athletic face and build to be believable.
Though Ben is no 17 year old, he does have an innocence and a baby face, and that helps in a role like this. Noah Galvin is in fact the most believable physically, but I've yet to hear raves about his acting.

It would be a real shame if they can’t recast/ cast it effectively, and it essentially becomes the Ben Platt show. It’s a great score attached to a nice bit of zetgeist theatre, but I think they’ve a way to go to prove that it’s anything more than his great performance.

Sam Lupton would be fantastic I think, but as soon as I saw Yank at Charing Cross, I couldn't help but think how amazing Scott Hunter (Stu) would be as Evan Hansen.

I am very late on the bandwagon here and finally downloaded the CD yesterday. I had heard a couple of songs on EP without really listening to which musical they were from. Really enjoying the music and songs. Will it work over here in the West End or is it more of a cult musical that would do a few weeks at Southwark Playhouse?
Also had an absolute nightmare when I bought it on iTunes. It downloaded as 2 separate CD's with the opening number as CD1 and the rest on CD2. Tried to fix it and ended up with all the tracks out of order so the finale became track 4. Spoke to Apple on the phone for over an hour and even they couldn't fix it. They decided to delete it and give me my money back and try again today. I think I will buy an actual copy. Much easier.

I downloaded it from amazon as I’m fed up of itunes stuff messing stuff up and being out of order, and my son got the sexy blue vinyl for Christmas in a great big gatefold sleeve...like the olden days 😊

I don't see how this is going to develop an audience in London. It'll be very hard to squeeze this in..it's not a "fun night out" a la Jamie or Dreamgirls, it's not a "global phenomenon" like Hamilton, it's not "epic" like Les Mis and Phantom, not a jukebox. I just can't figure out how it will be packaged fora British audience.
When they say "a while", I suppose it could be a while. I just booked my ticket to Fun House today, and realized that it was Broadway's 2015 Tony pick, and it took it around three years to crossover.

Dear Evan Hansen is a show that deals with issues that are very current, bullied teens, teenage suicide rates, social media etc and that's part of the reason it's become so successful. If the show comes in a few years time, will it still be as relevant? I'm not saying those issues wont wont be around then, but it's very much a subject about today.
I suspect it will be another Next To Normaland not arrive for a very long time.

I find the music incredibly beige, like most of Paul and Pasek's work. All very lite-pop and nothing particularly theatrical.
