I saw AAIP three times in Paris and really enjoyed it - most especially the 17 minute ballet in the second act. Cope and Fairchild (I'm a longstanding and great NYCB fan) were brilliant in that ... and it was wonderful seeing the show with a Parisian audience; almost entirely French. They were enraptured.
I have a ticket for the first preview (Sat night March 4th, 7.30pm) in the Dominion's Circle Q28 with a full view - (which is certainly best for watching the ballet). I cannot now go and wondered if anyone might like this ticket. I paid £16.50 for it but will happily sell it for half price: £8. It is an e-ticket so I could forward it to you.

Glad to see the first performance is pretty much sold completely, its only single seats left pretty much! Only 39 seats left according to the website, but of course some could of been sent for comps or deals.

The previews are already reduced by that amount, it isn't an offer, you can get it on the show's website. There is a slightly bigger offer at londontheatredirect.com, though, on second and third price seats. God I can't see this show lasting very long |

Whoever thought it was a good idea to book this show into the huge Dominion with all those seats to fill, needs sacking. Right. Now.
It's going to be one expensive folly. Even if the reviews are raves, I just fail to see this having mass appeal, which it will really need.
Made worse by the arrival of 42nd street which I think may actually appeal more.

Really? I personally would of thought American in Paris would have more appeal than 42nd Street to a general audience? But I think both are hugely risky in their respective theatres. I can't see either making it past a year or so, unless the reviews are spectacular or they do something more regarding promo.

Well this is absolutely stunning. I want the interval to end so I can see more!
Edit for the fuller verdict: apart from a bit of a clunky script (some bad bad jokes especially) I absolutely loved this. There was a lot more dance than I was expecting due to an earlier discussion in this thread - and what amazing dancing. I'm a fan of Wheeldon's other works so I knew what to expect on that front but it was all performed wonderfully. I loved the fluidity of the design and the use of projections and lighting, and the costumes were beautiful. Full house tonight and what seemed like a very receptive audience. The music is just lovely, really special to hear it played like that. I can't wait to go again.

I think it wasn't just the cheers but also the rapt attention that you could feel from the entire audience.

I'm gonna wait to see reviews from both AAIP and 42nd Street, I'm really in doubt between those two as my ''spectacle musical'' of my trip to London in April.

saw this last night.... The Dominion is too big for it, it needs more dancers on stage, we've heard the songs before in "Crazy For You" (I know this came first) and I'm not sure the piece really knows what it is (musical/ballet/concept show) - but gosh the dance sequences, lights, costumes and sets were gorgeous. What talent on that stage. The leads performers were just incredible. This is what La La Land should have been. Half our group adored it, the other less impressed. My verdict? Dancing 9/10 - overall show. 7/10. Theatre was 80 percent full. A nice show but won't be here in two years.

Thought this was quite wonderful. Stunning choreography, two brilliant leads and the glorious music of Gershwin, what a magical night this was for me. Loved the set, projections, costumes and the beautiful lighting design. I agree that the Dominion is probably too big a theatre for this show. A smaller theatre like the Adelphi would have been more suitable. But I'm not complaining and will be back to see it again in three weeks.

Agree with almost every word theatrefan77 ... but I did love the wide sweep of the Dominion stage - while it meant it sometimes looked a tad sparsely occupied, the space does allow for some design and choreography choices that would not be possible in a smaller venue. I was sat in the bargain Row A seats, on the centre aisle - perhaps not the best overall view of the choreography (a lot of head-turning!), but I really didn't notice missing feet and loved the completely uninterrupted view. A little light pollution from the conductor's podium and his head in line of sight when standing, but he sat down out of the way when not and I found myself so lost in the action on stage that I barely noticed it after a minute or two. For those particularly bothered by such things, suggest you avoid the four seats either side of the centre aisle. Beautiful design - I particularly loved the 'regime change' at the beginning (being deliberately vague to avoid spoiling) - and absolutely exquisite choreography, perfectly complimenting the score, which I love. And what a cast. Absolutely nothing about the show I didn't like. Booked again when I got home, doubt that will be the last visit either! |
