Ian McKellen revealed today in an interview at the Fringe he was offered Mother Goode at the Palladium but turned it down as he was too busy. But said it was a dream part he really wants to do! Maybe this is the option for 2020/21 He's already done panto once before. Played the dame at the Old Vic a few years ago. I forget which panto but it was the first one I'd seen since I was a child. He was brilliant. It was Aladdin, Ian McKellan was Widow Twankey . If I’m not mistaken he did it two years running . He’d be an interesting Mother Goose. That role has been called the Hamlet of Dame roles ! I wish Paul O’Grady would play Mother Goose. |

Two west end names and late announcement makes me wonder if a name was meant for Baby Bear but pulled out.

After 3 years of exciting Palladium panto announcements, this one’s leaving me a bit cold. Can’t quite put my finger on why - perhaps I was hoping for different or more exciting casting. The headshots for each character that Baz posted last night look rather awkward, especially O’Grady’s and the bears’.

Wish they'd got a photo or photoshopped one of Nigel in the Bears costume. I see this panto has got about 16 dancers when most QDOS ones only have a max of 12. But it gives performers work.

Having seen the casting for this, I’m really hoping to see Theatre Boards very own BurlyBeaR being cast here (also what happened to poor old Bungle Bear from Rainbow?). It could have made for some interesting script changes - Momma Bear - ‘Someone’s been eating my porridge” Baby Bear - “Someone’s been eating my porridge” BurlyBeaR - “Never mind the porridge, someone’s been scoffing my monster munch!” |

Enjoyed last years, my first pantomime and was dithering about going this year.
Finally got round to checking availability and price and was pleasantly surprised they were selling orphan single seats for £34.50.
Picked up a centre stalls row L for this price for the evening performance on the Saturday before Christmas.

The few remaining Stalls and Royal Circle seats for the 19.30 performance on Sat 21 December are ALL on offer at £34.50. They are all single seats but still a great deal for solo visitors and couples who don't mind sitting apart.
On Monday 30 December there are £24.50 single seats in the stalls for the 14.30 performance . One is in row M where four nearby seats together currently cost £129.50 each.

Great prices for the single seats but even though I go to the theatre a lot by myself I dont think I'd want to see a panto alone.

The Palladium panto is the only show I book four tickets for us all to see together close to Christmas. That said, going on my own to a pantomime wouldn't bother me and I have done so a few times when there were silly £5 -£10 prices for some matinees in January. (The one time I did feel a bit out of place was at an amateur My Fair Lady. I booked a single remaining front row seat and didn't realise until I got there that it was a school production. All the cast and most of the audience were teenagers and everyone else in the front two rows were young enough to be my grandchildren !) |

And dont ask why I was going in the first place.....😁 I'm going to the Palladium panto solo (bagged a bargain single seat in the upper circle for £22.50, don't think they'd reduced the stalls prices as much when I booked or if they had I didn't notice). I also saw the last 2 solo so I don't care but wouldn't have bothered this time without the cheap ticket (plus a free Ice Cream thanks to an o2 deal that stacked!) I have borrowed 2 kids for Frozen 2 on Friday though! |

May not happen as there's only a handful of seats left for most performances and most of the single seats still available have been slashed in price to between £20.00 and £34.50. I got one in the centre of stalls row H for next Friday's matinee for £34.50. Was £149.50. |

Wow, I've read some scathing reviews in my time but that's a whole new level of vitriol.
I've been with my grown up family to the Palladium "panto" every year since it revival but it isn't a traditional pantomime for a traditional family audience and never has been. However if Mr Belfield's review is to be believed the smut factor has been pushed way way up this year and it perhaps needs to be marketed as only suitable for age 14 +. Some families will have spent several hundred pounds on tickets and won't be happy for mum and dad to be shocked and embarrassed and the under tens first to be scared and then not to understand a lot of what's going on.
Looking forward to reading other reviews and making my own mind up on Friday.

I just listened to that review. Wow. Is that guy really the most popular reviewer in the UK? Makes me sad if he is.
I don't understand how he can say he enjoyed the previous ones then complain that this is basically a variety show with some filthy jokes. I only saw Snow White but that was very much a variety show.
One that had jokes about Julian Clary meeting Charlie Stemp on Hampstead Heath and waking up to a solid 8 inches... of snow... Why should he be so offended about Julian's circus rings? The more adult bits will go over the kids' heads like jokes in The Simpsons or James Bond went over mine when I was growing up. (Pussy Galore?) To keep calling it R18 (the BBFC age rating applied to actual pornography) is just stupid.
His real issue with the show seems to be that he didn't get comp tickets, and he even has a rant about that at one point.
Looking forward to seeing it in the New Year.

Could only listen to 4 minutes of that review.
Alex was being very bitter and personal towards lots of the people working behind the scenes at Qdos. They haven’t made a show that caters solely to the ‘Number 1 West End reviewer in the UK’... yawn!
Didn’t know he was a such a pearl clutcher. What’s wrong with ‘I usually like it, but this year it’s a bit too rude for me, it will probably still do well with the 90% adult audience it attracts’ - instead of aggrandising the end of panto?!
