Haven’t heard the cast recording, but unfortunately saw the show tonight, at the Shaftesbury Theatre which seems to be synonymous with jukebox musicals, or could that be the graveyard for the genre.
Even though you don’t need to know Shakespeare it helps, but really the music left me totally unengaged and cold, seems to be aimed at the snapchat generation, being over 40 this has sadly passed me by. However the show was performed with great energy and the lead Miriam-Teak Lee should be nominated for a Oliver and she had a good supporting cast. This show was a lot better than the former show Motown, which is one of the worst shows I have seen. The book was mildly amusing but wasn’t as good as Mamma Mia or as smart as Jersey Boys. The book was better that Bat Out of Hell, but that show was leagues better, as was We Will Rock You, which also had a poor book.
The show sadly didn’t work for me

Got excited this morning as there's adverts on the giant electronic boards in Manchester for the album. I thought it was advertising a return to Manchester but it's just promoting the cast CD. A few of us up here, Burlybear included were a bit miffed it's labelled original London cast, not Manchester!

This might not happen for a while, but later on if anyone happens across a spoilerific synopsis which explains how all the songs are worked into the plot, and wouldn't mind posting a link... that would be helpful for long-distance potential fans (ie, me). Google has not yielded one to me thus far. I tried to give the cast recording a listen but I couldn't get a sense of what was going on. But, that's just the kind of score it is; I could hardly have expected otherwise.

Google has not yielded one to me thus far. I tried to give the cast recording a listen but I couldn't get a sense of what was going on. But, that's just the kind of score it is; I could hardly have expected otherwise. Tricky, and I don’t want to do a spoilerific synopsis but to give a few examples: Anne Hathaway and William S disagree about the ending of his new play. She questions why Juliet has to kill herself over a man, he wants a tragedy. They argue: “I Want It That Way” Juliet escapes from Verona and her overbearing family to go on an adventure to Paris with her mates where they’ll see all the sights and find love “Show Me Love” Meanwhile, male protagonist Francois is in Paris trying to grow up and be a man but under the thumb of his dad “Overprotected”. He’s under pressure from his father to marry but is confused about what he wants “Confident”. Dad is going to send him off to the army if he doesn’t sort himself out. Juliet and her pals arrive in Paris, they blag their way into a club where his birthday Ball is being held and meet Francois. He immediately to falls for her (or is she just a convenient way of escapting the army?) Things go a bit too fast and Francois asks her to marry him. She realises she’s led him on “Oops... I Did It Again” etc etc. Going any further will give the twists away, but it’s essentially a battle of wills between Will and Anne as they each take turns at developing the plot of his new play whilst also appearing in it. This throws up questions about their own marriage and Wills committment to her. She loves him but is she prepared to carry on putting up with him? “That’s The Way It Is”. He represents the old fashioned gender and sexual stereotypes and she is much more forward thinking. It sounds silly and it is, it’s not supposed to be taken seriously. It’s daft and a bit cheesy but very cleverly done.

Finished listening to the soundtrack. As good as Miriam etc are they cannot shine a light to the original superstars who made the songs great in the first place.Mind you,I suppose that’s the case with all jukebox musical soundtracks.Jessie’s J’s is the stand out track.

I also listened to the soundtrack and compared them to the originals as I cannot remember most of them. I distinctly disliked how these original stars performed them and I love the & Juliet version.

I’ve listened to the soundtrack thrice now! I love the musical versions, even the ones where I disliked the originals. It’s a big thumbs up from me!

I like it. But Cassidy's voice sounds odd, right?

Just looked at re-booking in December as my daughter adores this show.Bit shocked at the masses and masses of seats available at all prices so early in the run.

Oh wow, I thought it was selling quite well. Anytime I’ve looked on the day of a performance, it’s been almost sold out with a few random seats dotted around.

^It is on TKTS so maybe will sell better closer to the performance day as ‘passing trade’ goes through Leicester Square for example.

Are you implying that Britney's vocals are better than Miriam's? I might need a moment to process this 🤣

Thank you for taking the time to provide that information, BurlyBeaR! That does give me a better idea of the vibe of the show.
