It just makes me think that the bulk of the music must be on track if they can’t/won’t alter it to complement the voice of the talent.

I just seen the show tonight. It was my introduction to Joseph (other than knowing the Bible story) and while I thought the show was fine, I thought the ad-lib from Donny was a bit much. The audience ate it up and some gave him a standing ovation for Song Of The King, afterwards he did a reprise of it. He was talented, but I was waiting for the show to continue.
However please keep in mind before I get shot here that I’m in my early twenties and have never had any previous exposure to Donny, so I’m not exactly in the demographic for it. I totally do understand why it’s was such a huge deal and I’m glad that at least the audience had fun with it.
I will definitely see the show again when it comes to my local city with Joe McElderry to see if I have a better experience.

The reprise has been there since the 90’s. It’s a nice cheap way of stretching out the running time.

As well as being the proverbial crowd pleaser, think it’s also reprised immediately cos Pharaoh has such minimal stage time/singing time.
Shame they dropped King of my Heart which was added for the Adelphi Pimlott revival.
That said with JD in the role was a blessed relief to not have to hear him sing a second song.
Geordie Joe could do it though :-) One of the purest voices to come out of the abysmal X Factor!

My main takeaway from a mega mix video that’s appeared on YouTube is DONNY GETS THE LAST BOW like even Jason only had the second bow

My main takeaway from a mega mix video that’s appeared on YouTube is DONNY GETS THE LAST BOW like even Jason only had the second bow To be fair, it's Donny's name above the title and face on the billboard. A lot of people will have bought tickets just to see him. http://instagram.com/p/DDH2ICKo6M5

At this stage, surely Donny can only be a draw to women over 60?!!
Even people of my age (40's) would struggle to know who he is!

Can't beat a little Donny Osmond flair.

Cough cough. Me. I'll be there (last two days of the Donny run). It's a big buzz with the Donny UK fans, many people I know heading North for this. Donny sells out Hammersmith every tour (two nights last year) and Arenas. Donny was Joseph in the US for years (2,000 performances on Broadway, Chicago and on tour 1992-1998, apparently), and is of course Joseph in the film (adding for those under 40 who "struggle to know who he is").
And it's (from Adephi memory) part of the usual Joseph for the King to get the audience to whoop at his performance, isn't it? Big whoops for The King ...

I'm 30 and the Donny Osmond Joseph film is probably the most formative piece of media in my entire life

With trains (and flights) and accommodation, it's not a cheap excursion to see him, but for the die-hard fans the bloke is in the UK instead of his residency in Las Vegas and it's worth the trip. And you can't underestimate the friendships that have been made through the Donny fandom, this is a reason to meet up with friends from around the UK and have a laugh at the Festive season, with a bit of Donny thrown in. Honestly. In February every year for something like the last 17 years there's a get-together at a Hotel near Heathrow where 120-150 Donny/Osmond fans meet up for a full weekend of games, dinner, dancing, have a laugh. I haven't been for a few years now but it used to be such a lot of fun. Donny friends in the US have stayed with me when he's toured the UK.

Well I booked ages ago as Brum is a great city and Hippodrome a great theatre (plus I used to live there) so I often go there for big tours. Wonder if there will be the same hysteria for this guy as there is for Donny currently! Don't think I'll be throwing my boxers though.... Fun fact - last Joseph tour at the Hippodrome, lady in front of me got a Tupperware out in the interval and had a curry. Didn't really mind as she was silent and well behaved during the show.

Back in Canaan the curry was hot And to BVM's taste it was not But the lady in front with the Tupperware She behaved and was silent (she was almost not there) BVM didn't mind spicy smells Just so long as they got some as well.

Youtube smartphone footage of the megamix and I can understand every word Donny sings. Compare with J Donovan - Nope. Not a word.
The reprise (or at least a little coda) of 'Song Of The King' has been in it since the earliest recording in 1969 with Tim Rice as Pharaoh, but I'm surprised they didn't bring back 'King Of My Heart' just to give Donny and fans a bit more.
'King Of My Heart' isn't a very good song - I can't understand why the lyrics have Pharaoh in self doubt about whether the people love him, and describing himself as a fool. Quite a difficult sing - really low and then very high register - Dean Collinson's recording is brilliant, with the Elvis-like break in the voice in the perfect place.
I hadn't noticed before listening to Dean Collinson that the wandering melody starts off very similar to 'Wonders Of The World' in ALW's later 'Wizard Of Oz' which Tim co-wrote. It must be hilarous being Tim Rice when the call comes from ALW:
ALW "Hey Tim - I've written some brand new melodies, would you like to set lyrics to them?' Tim: "Andrew, you rum old cove, how exciting. I'm free apparently. Elton says he's busy writing 'hits' with 'other people'". They both laugh uproariously. After the call ALW dusts off an old tune and gives it a new rhythm chosen at random by one of his cats walking across his computer, and hits 'send'. A week later, ALW is on his sun lounger in Marbella sipping Pina Coladas, while Tim sweats over a hot typewriter in England pining to be part of a cricket match, the sounds of which drift over melifluosly from an adjoining field. Tim opens an audio file and plays today's task set by ALW. Tim listens... Tim : "Oh.... That again!" [Tim goes bananas, chasing nirvanas].
