I prefer the original Broadway cast CD, Allen is great but the acoustic on the revival recording is so dead, there's no reverb at all, it sounds like it was recorded in a cardboard box.

I’m really keen to see reactions to this tonight. With the cast that they have, they must be aiming to transfer, surely?

Sweet Charity is a musical with a book by Neil Simon and this musical has been overdone, where conversely the plays of Neil Simon are the exact opposite. As pointed out elsewhere in this very thread, especially in the the last couple of pages, Sweet Charity is a musical that has some delicious songs by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields, however the several times I have seen this musical it has never knocked it out of the park. Perhaps makes it to second base. Anne Marie Duff is one of the highest regardest actress on a London stage, I say London opposed to the West End, as for all her familiarity she has done the West End only once! Sure she played her role very well and was very enjoyable and thought she achieved when she sung her numbers with gusto and joy, but then again I had the feeling she maybe a bit too old for the part. The other actors played their parts well, without blowing me away - but really this is a star vehicle for Hope Charity. Here is where I part company with my post and I have to say some of the staging was strange and well left me cold. I know that the Donmar you have to be a bit more clever as you are severely limited for room and factor in where you are going to put the band as well. {Spoiler - click to view} The Central Park Lake was done by a kiddies ballpond . This could have represented better by a projector on the ceiling projected on the stage floor.
The lift scene at the end of act 1 was laughable as it looked so terrible, they had this mini screen go up shaped like a lift, but the screen was vinyl sheet that rolls up - in front you had a fake overhead projector, where really all the projections were done by the main projectors over the circle.
The ‘parachute jump’ was perhaps done the best with a plank of wood going through a wooden stepladder, with fairground attractions in miniatures with the actors lying on the floor, holding them going round a turntable, not really groundbreaking.
A production that relied on projection, which nearly fatally killed it, where they should have used the projection they didn’t, but used it inappropriately instead.
As I said the songs are great and the story is mildly enjoyable.
3 Stars

Saw the Nottingham production last year with Rebecca Trehearn which was a masterly effort.Phantom of London’s review left me incredulous with disbelief at the staging. Thanks, but no thanks!

Look up 'Donmar Warehouse' as a location, and watch the stories. There are a few pics on that part, unsure if any have been posted properly under that tag, but knonw a few were storied under it. Hope it helps.

Seen it now. Yes, that does look rather in the way. Interestingly there was a similar steel pole there for Sweat.

He is my great uncle.
No Neil Simon Play has been done since Sunshine Boys, for a playwright that plays run for years, suddenly no one wants to touch with a barge pole.
