If you haven't seen it, a first look at the new production of Wicked in Germany. And thankfully no cherry picker

Here’s a link to a YouTube video of the trailer: I LOVE what they’ve done. It’s very similar to what I imagined Oz to look like from the Wicked books, it’s a very scary and totalitarian society. I’m obsessed with the way Elphaba flies and even the way she glides into Nessa’s room for that scene in Act Two. I’d absolutely love to see this production.

I think the sets look great but I'm not so sure about the costumes. Some of them, especially Glinda's, look a bit cheap and "plasticy". Of course it's hard to be certain when you only see each for a few seconds so maybe they look better in person.

I wonder how the fans would feel if they introduced some of the better effects into the London production?

Some 'fans' are already complaining about the new orchestrations, and how they have ruined 'the sound' of wicked.
I'd love to see the new flying effects come in, actually, i'd like to have the whole new production come here, though it will never happen.
Looking at the costumes, Glinda's school outfit reminds me of legally blonde and Fiyero's school blazer reminds me of Everybodys talking about Jamie.

I love the look of this new production. It’s actually very exciting to get a new take on Wicked since the original staging and costumes have been used for so long now. That’s a testament to the original production, of course, but this new take on it immediately looks cooler and fresher.
I have no idea how they’re accomplishing that flying affect, though. Are they tweaking something in the edit for the sake of the trailer? Because it looks so seamless.

Yes the sparkles under Nessa’s wheelchair and over the Grimmerie in No Good Deed. Not convinced that’s going to be happening on stage…

I wonder how the fans would feel if they introduced some of the better effects into the London production? I remember seeing a very flat midweek matinee several years back. Jennifer DiNoia was over from Broadway playing Elphaba and was a superstar in every sense. Otherwise, the show was poorly cast and looked terribly tired. Now, I really like Wicked and have seen it dozens of times, on Broadway, West End and UK tour, but I imagine watching that was like what non-fans of Phantom or Les Mis see when they watch those shows. At that point, with less than half-full house and a very dreary atmosphere and performances, I thought it looked ready to close. It has obviously done years of profit since and still has a huge following, but I don't think I'd go back unless they do something exceptional with the casting (Shoshana Bean limited run, for example) or a hugely revamped production like the new German production above.

I was one of those who talked about the new orchestration. I simply think that with no audible brass section (both the in overture and Defying Gravity), and the loss of the singular keyboard patches; they’ve made the production sound worse and lose the singularity if the score for no apparent reason, other than budget.. This production will apparently use 6 musicians, and be tracked in its entirety, same as what’s happening in ALW’s Cinderella (a picture posted by the orchestrator indicated a click). I don’t believe they’re innovative at all (while the production is), and that they are simply trimmed down versions of the original, as clearly shown in Jeanine Wacker’s Instagram (she’s Glinda), where she showed the band playing “For Good” and it was just a reduction where the woodwind solos were played by piano and sounded like a simple rythm section. Perhaps I’m wrong and the new orchestrations are better. Who knows. I only criticize (with all my respect for the original and new creative teams), what I’ve seen.

Every production of any show, after its original production, has changed and usually made smaller in some way, and the orchestration is usually first on the list. If you're going to produce a brand new production of a well known show, then you want it to have its own identity. You dont want it to sound like every other Wicked production around the world. It also gives them more reason to record it.

If you're going to produce a brand new production of a well known show, then you want it to have its own identity. You dont want it to sound like every other Wicked production around the world. It also gives them more reason to record it. Most productions used the 14/17 piece reduced version, but none of them until now have changed the orchestration. Prague, Copenhagen, and Finland (the three professional non replicas until now) used the William David Brohn orchestration. Of course, the sound systems and players are different. That is why they don’t sound exactly the same. Dutch Wicked was very drum heavy, for example (this is the usual case with Dutch shows). While I could agree with in you say about finding a new identity for the new show, this new orchestration is simply a poorly done reduction if the original. There seems to be nothing exciting in all the clips that have been posted out until now. That being said, I could be wrong, but what’s out there so far is not promising, in my opinion.

I Don't see the point of reimagining a whole production, but having it sound the same. I'd want to create a new world for the show to live in, but thats just me. I'm not a Wicked superfan so i guess i'm not attached to it in the way others are.

I definitely think they could revamp the flying, it's not all that exciting currently. It's only the song and lights that make it half decent.

A news report on the production, which gives a glimpse of the new staging of One Short Day. Really don't like what they've done with Glinda's costume. As someone said before it's very "Legally Blonde"

I'm just watching Wicked on a well known streaming site. If anyone has seen this can you answer a question. Is it different versions spliced together? I swear one minute I'm watching Kristen and Idena and the next minute it's completely different actors. Or am I just getting a bit senile?

I don't actually know, but could somebody have put together the best bits of recording from a few different shows? A sort of "patchwork performance"?
Maybe have a look in the video's description or comments section and see if it's explained?

anyone know if we can expect any new West End recordings for a trailer? suddenly receiving a lot of promotion through online ads for the show, and as much as I do love Willemijn, still seeing the German promo footage after years of being a fan pains me a little

I can't imagine Wicked will bother.
They're just happy to reissue the same old same old. Unfortunately.
