If the producers are choosing to distribute videos of people singing excerpts from the show in order to publicise it, and some people find those performances lacking, then surely it’s acceptable to say that? I’m sure RT will be fabulous when she’s got it under her belt (my assumption comes from the overwhelmingly positive reaction to her on here) but please don’t ask people to just overlook the inadequacy of those video performances because of her past record. She isn’t immune to criticism. The point of those videos is to promote the show, on the basis of what we’ve seen of her so far... fail. Yes, but you're missing my point again. No one is asking anyone to judge that video in light of her past performance. People are free to say her performance is rubbish if that's what they think, but any criticism that is done by comparison has to be in context, so you have to accept that there is always going to be a vast difference in quality between someone who has had 2 days of rehearsal and someone who has had a very long time to refine both vocal and acting the character... Do you think that the ‘casual’ viewer of those videos is taking account of the context or how long they had to rehearse it? Those videos are being put forward as the shop window of the production. There’s no “ooh give us a break cos we’ve only been doing this two days”. That’s not mentioned anywhere, naturally because it would sound ridiculous. So, it’s put forward as a representation of the show. And as such it’s not really that good (in my opinion). |

That's fine, that's your opinion, but not sure why you were responding to me then given I was making a specific point about contextual comparison. The "casual viewer" will probably never have heard of Jenn Colella so won't be making such a comparison. |

Speaking to several people who were at the press event it all came across very well. This show will love or die based on the word of mouth it gets from the people who see it, not from a YouTube video of a press event. |

Yes I was at the launch and I thought all three songs sounded great live. I went from being casually interested in the musical as just something new to watch to deciding then and there that I needed tickets. I've only listened to the videos I recorded on my phone since, but I think the cast sounded pretty great, and the atmosphere in the room was very excited and positive. A couple of friends of mine who've seen the show on Broadway were remarking at how good everyone sounded too.
Anyway we've got a while yet til it opens and I think it'll be really special when it does.

It's only people into musical theatre in a big way who will realistically see those clips and judge them. This show will live or die on reviews largely based on emotional connection
I've had the cast recording for a while and it causes me to randomly burst into tears on buses. I lost a close friend on 9/11 so perhaps my response is altered by that

I feel so bad for genuine fans of the show. There is a “fan” of Wicked who is obsessed with Rachel Tucker and Alice Fearn and she will most likely become a Come From Away “fan” where she will slate everyone who isnt Rachel Tucker.
She literally started an argument with me in the comments of that Rachel video where I asked for a cast recording.

The back row of the Dress Circle is being sold at £30 which is a reasonable deal given that nothing happens high up in this show. |

Bitten the bullet and booked a pre-Christmas trip to Ireland for this. 48 hours in a city I've never visited before, I haven't been this excited to see a show in a good while.

Thank you, that was fascinating. The discussion of subsidised theatre spending in Ireland was very frank and interesting. I wish I could see it at the Abbey, but I’m sure it will be great at the Phoenix. |

Well just seen the 2nd preview. Rather mixed bag in terms of cast. Females strong males quite mixed. First half of show the weaker. 2nd is strong. Quite nervy at times , some jokes fell flat, accents need work,some of the emotional scence were flat also. Will write full thoughts later. Needs more rehearsal. Also Rachel is wearing red bob wig. She did get the notes in me and the skybut she wasnt belting until the latter part. I thought she was doing it in lower key but it worked. stand outs were all the females, The guy who is Oz is the weakest cast member.

A relative of mine saw this last night. She's a seasoned play goer, but wouldn't be the greatest fan of musicals ( I know, the horror ) She went to see it as she had followed the story over the years and wanted to see how they managed to turned it into a musical.
I didn't think she would love it so I was surprised when she said she thought it was excellent. The staging was well done, the cast were full of energy and it was truly an ensemble piece. It's focus on the spirit of community and the goodness of human nature was uplifting and inspiring, saying the audience (who loved it) were in really good spirits on the way out.
Had a thought the music was a bit 'samey' didn't think it was too much of a problem, but thought it was a missed opportunity to vary the score with different tempos and textures, especially with all the Irish melodies in there. Forgot to ask what she thought of the Gander accents.
After, she got chatting to the cast in the Abbey bar, who she said were all lovely and excited about the show, they were "buzzing" and a lot of them seemed to have family over.
I'm looking forward to it now!

I saw it on Saturday night as well. Pleased to report it's in great shape, especially for a third preview. I saw the show on Broadway earlier this year and this cast compares very well.
The audience lapped it up with an instant standing ovation, for whatever that's worth these days. It was also nice to see the real Beverley Bass in the audience.
Rachel Tucker's a joy to watch as always but the ensemble is the star of this show, and rightfully so. Hope it find an audience in London.

I had no idea that anyone outside of Newfoundland had heard the word “Newfinese,” let alone would use it in a foreign newspaper. Mind blown. (“Newfoundland English” is more correct.) As for the review, talk about damning with faint praise. |
