Having watched the Tucker clip, Becky Gulsvig and the Broadway understudy (sorry can't remember her name), it makes you realise just how good Jenn Colella is, not just vocally but how well she acts in Me and the Sky

Let's remember though, thet have literally been in rehearsal a couple of days. Rachel was probably given basic acting direction and rehearsal so it's not going to be a 100% vocal (though she sounded great!) or acting performance until more rehearsal and development has gotten underway.

I keep looking at this thread and thinking of 'Fly Away Home'. Each time, I wonder how they're going to get the geese to behave on stage.

Having read the comments about that video and then watching it myself, I was expecting much worse, it’s not bad at all.
I don’t know anything about this show but definitely interested now that Rachel is in it. I can’t wait to see her on stage again.

Re: "And somehow I'm 51".
Each of the cast members play multiple roles/characters during the show, this isn't the only character that Rachel will be playing. I guess it's 'age blind casting', as long as the story of these amazing people gets told, it doesn't matter what the cast look like necessarily. Jenn Colella has discussed this in multiple interviews, one of which is in the Broadway Backstory podcast, episode 15, it's mentioned about 36 minutes in, and might be elsewhere in that podcast too. Outside of this point, I'd definitely recommend listening to that episode for a bit of history on the show, it's fascinating.

16:22 in this video - the start of Somewhere In The Middle of Nowhere. I've not seen this number anywhere from the press launch but here. Rachel sounds incredible on this song.

I think she's done some PR events as Captain Bass. www.ibdb.com/replacements/come-from-away-510272

So it’s not terrible but I agree she is struggling in places. I’m sure she will settle into her own interpretation of the song though. But I agree with others, very difficult to compare with Jenn Colella who looks to do it with so much ease.

(Come on... for someone who is so quick to jump down everyone else’s throat... 😂)

Careful what you say about Rachel. Seems you can’t say anything critical or seemingly negative on this snowflake forum anymore.
In short Rachel is a good singer but she didn’t sing or act it brilliantly. But it was a first performance and maybe she was nervous - but even I was surprised with the flat notes and totally skipping over lots of the thought process, emotional gear changes and basic acting. She has time so let’s not be too harsh yet......

Snowflake forum, seriously. Seen plenty of criticism and healthy debate on here about all sorts of performers, Rachel included. Nobody's perfect every time though I do believe it harsh to judge based on one performance. Unfortunately and this goes particularly for those formally of Wicked that they have their vociferous fans who will blindly defend anything they do and the Flip side is they have their critics who refuse to see past their dislike

Not being a snowflake, it just seems crazy to compare someone who has been singing a song for years vs someone who has just started rehearsing the role. I'd say that about anyone on here tbh

I’d never heard the song before I heard Rachel’s version at the press event. Have to admit I’ve definitely heard Rachel sing better, and the performance didn’t particularly make me want to go and see her in the show. Maybe something to do with the acoustics in the room - as a singer myself, the argument of ‘it’s a new song for her’ doesn’t really stand with me as she will have been rehearsing this song for weeks.
Thought the group bits sounded lovely though - will definitely be visiting into the run.

Oh give over, all anyone is saying is that it's preposterous to compare someone who's had two days of rehearsal to someone who originated the role and has had years to perfect it. Doesn't take much to understand that they are two completely different sets of circumstances so the comparison is just pointless. Nothing to do with Rachel - I'd say the same about any performer.

If the producers are choosing to distribute videos of people singing excerpts from the show in order to publicise it, and some people find those performances lacking, then surely it’s acceptable to say that?
I’m sure RT will be fabulous when she’s got it under her belt (my assumption comes from the overwhelmingly positive reaction to her on here) but please don’t ask people to just overlook the inadequacy of those video performances because of her past record. She isn’t immune to criticism.
The point of those videos is to promote the show, on the basis of what we’ve seen of her so far... fail.

We also need to remember that listening to recorded audio through our mobile phones never sounds as good as actually being in the room.
I think Rachel will end up being awesome. Yes I'm a fan - she's my favourite Elphaba and her cabaret concert at Zedel was sublime, but I'm not blind to her faults. Her recent performance at Shoshana Bean's concert was a dreadful shouty mess. But I'd still pay to hear her sing the phone book 😂

But also, if they announced the cast at this event, had the cast all gathered and didn’t offer a performance of some kind, then there would be critics asking why not. It’s probably not worth getting our knickers in a knot about. It was a nice idea and not terrible by any means.

No one is asking anyone to judge that video in light of her past performance. People are free to say her performance is rubbish if that's what they think, but any criticism that is done by comparison has to be in context, so you have to accept that there is always going to be a vast difference in quality between someone who has had 2 days of rehearsal and someone who has had a very long time to refine both vocal and acting the character...
