Lovely. One to avoid. Robbie Williams is quite possibly the most irritating, annoying, talentless acts around. A second rate pub singer that even other pub singers would feel ashamed to be compared to. If I could rid the world of one singer, he'd be at the top of the list. I despise him as much as my late grandmother. And she was a friend of the Mosleys.
Oh I feel much better now. As you were.

insert code here Although Robbie is not my favourite singer, he and Guy can certainly write a tune. He is the best selling solo singer in the UK selling 75 million worldwide.Just heard No Regrets on the radio yesterday and reminded me of one of his finer moments. Will be interesting to see this.

I am a very proud Robbie fan and a fan of David Walliams books too and think something beautiful will be produced.

Agreed TM. It’s a wonderful story that is very theatrical and deserves to be sung

Hmm, reserving judgement on this one. Pop musicians/singers/songwriters often don't do so well at musical theatre.

Gary Barlow's success has been limited, but Elton John's done alright. I'm quietly optimistic, assuming Williams and Chambers receive decent support and feedback from the RSC during the writing process.

I hope Jennifer Saunders reprises her role from the TV version.

Quite amusing that all of Take That are gradually starting to write musicals (two people, I know, I'm exaggerating). That being said, I imagine it'd work quite well as a musical and I'm excited to see what they come up with.

I am more concerned about Doesn't directing a family musical than Robbie writing some songs.
Nothing that I have seen of Doran gives any real hint that he is right for this sort of project

He has done a play with music before with Mother Clapp. So at least there is some connection.
Did Doesn't direct the Merry Wives musical at the RSC?
I don't recall that being a huge success

He did direct that. The critics hated it but it sold out and was a big hit at the BO. I thought it was fun, certainly a starry cast. The RSC will hope for a WE transfer with this new venture

Is "Doesn't" a result of autocorrect, or is it a witty joke I'm not getting? Personally, I find him a bit hit and miss as a director, and most of his good work that I've seen happened before he took the reins at the RSC (has he lost his creativity because he's so otherwise busy? Because of some tedious house-style?), but I wouldn't automatically hold his lack of musical experience against him. Dominic Cooke did a reasonable job with Follies, after all.

It is more his lack of experience of creating family shows that is of concern. Getting the tone very slightly wrong can break a project. Over earnest and the kids get bored. Over silly and it puts off the parents.
There are plenty of experienced directors who could have helmed this project. There have been some great RSC family shows and some that fell short of the mark.
A successful transfer means lots of income for the original creative team. Perhaps he is trying to build his retirement fund...

As a “Personality” the Robster is irritating as hell, but I admit the bloke can bang out a tune when he puts his mind to it.
I also think Walliams has done a lot for getting kids into books (and writes a nice kids book) so why not turn that to theatre I guess

Walliams has already had done of his books adapted for the stage. Gangsta Grannie toured last year I think

It's like 'Sophie's Choice'! Well let's just say if I were Meryl Streep, I'd have no trouble leaving by myself.

Walliams has already had done of his books adapted for the stage. Gangsta Grannie toured last year I think Gangsta Granny toured last year and is currently (as well as a West End run at the Garrick and one due at the Harold Pinter!). Also Awful Auntie is currently touring, Chichester are doing The Midnight Gang later this year as are Nuffield, Southampton who are doing Billionaire Boy. And I remember there was Mr Stink which toured some years ago. When I first heard about this, I just thought "the RSC are trying to find another Matilda" as the connection between Walliams and Dahl is quite well known. But I suppose its still more original than yet ANOTHER Peter Pan or A Christmas Carol adaptation for them to have as the Christmas show (don't get me wrong, I loved both of them). Also I'm quite excited to hear Robbie and Guy Chamber's music as there are two songs on Robbie's "Swings Both Ways" album which I love; the first being "Snowblind" which is beautiful and to me almost sounds like something from a musical, maybe a sentimental 11 o'clock number or something like that...? The other being "No One Likes a Fat Pop Star" which is a great operatic satire with some terrific lyrics. So I guess I'm sort of looking forward to it (as by then it will probably my one of my last chances to use the 16-25 £5 offer! *gulp*), but won't have my expectations as high as back when I first heard the National were doing Pinocchio before the reviews came out.

Seems to me like they're trying to do another Matilda - which isn't a bad thing.
Williams isn't a songwriter - however Chambers is a classically trained composer (Studied composition at Guildhall) so at least the music will be more than 3 chords (looking at you Elton John/Bono/Lauper). Let's not forget Chambers also has his chamber opera, too.
This seems to me to be like THE GIRLS where they're relying on Williams' name to attract sales and record some promo songs - whereas Chambers will be doing the heavy music work (as Firth did for THE GIRLS) I could be wrong... maybe Williams has been slaving away at the piano for last 8 years... but I doubt it.
I just prey to God the lyrics rhyme properly and we're not treated to more pop rhymes on stage (I'm looking at you Bono/Lauper...)

I thought David Walliams himself might want to be involved. he is a successful writer and could surely write some lyrics especially the more humorous ones. Plus he is a mate of Robbie's and they have worked together before.
It will be interesting how hey cast this, the boy in the book is supposed to be 12 years old. So will it be a shared juvenile lead or might they cast a younger looking 16 to 18 year old who can do all the shows.

Just sat through the wonderful Billionaire Boy musical with a bus load of kids. We were all universally thrilled by it. Best new musical this year by far. The new musical book is way superior to mr Walliams original book not that the kids seemed to care as they loved both. But it’s the catchy songs and brilliant lyrics that really stand out. Way superior, instantly infectious and memorable. The song writing teams pop hits track record really hits home with a couple of instant Hits. So much so that I was left wondering why Mr Walliams wasn’t insisting on them for The Boy in the dress. The production itself will probably not match the glitz and polish of an RSC production but who cares as it is an absolute joy. Getting the right producer behind it (Jamie Wilson perhaps) Billionaire Boy could trounce Dress Boy this Christmas.
