So, I'm seeing this tonight in Southampton. Anyone know how many of the tour cast are in London and vice-versa, I believe we have an understudy Sarah from London

I'll just have to assume I had the full cast at Bend It Like Beckham. Was there ever a full cast in the last 6 months of Bend It Like Beckham?! I saw it in both September and December and the full cast weren't on, I read on the other forum that there was a lot of times the full cast weren't on and Preeya wasn't even the final two shows!  No idea. As far as I could tell all the main roles I saw were played by the main cast. |

The fact that this is touring and playing in the WE is mind boggling. I do admire the producers' confidence in the material though to release it on the road and in London simultaneously.

It's a great title, and I gather they were offered an incredible deal to continue in the West End, and the tour had been on sale for a few months by that point! |

This isn't going to be a very helpful comment as he's leaving the show soon and has been off for at least one performance, but I unexpectedly loved Richard Kind in this. I've always thought he was funny on TV, but didn't see him as Nathan Detroit. He changed my mind. He just naturally has 'funny bones,' so gets every bit of humour out of the role. Plus he seemed to be hugely enjoying himself. It was the first time I'd seen a Nathan Detroit who really adored Adelaide's show. He seemed amused and delighted throughout and he and Samantha Spiro were fantastic doing 'Sue Me.' There was a slight sense of the rest of the cast looking after him a bit in some of the dance numbers (lifting him onto furniture, handing him things) but somehow that added to the enjoyment too.
Trivia note: George Clooney is a good friend of Richard Kind's and was best man at his wedding.

To be honest, I'm quite surprised this isn't doing well. It's a great revival and the Phoenix isn't a huge theatre

Yes I do agree with the casting. It's nice to see it revived again, it's a good filler for the Phoenix too before a new show goes there at the end of the year |

Yes I think Richard is better known in the States. David Haig and Sophie Thompson are both very well known for their roles as a married couple in Four Weddings and a Funeral! Sophie Thompson has also been in other films and TV shows like Eastenders. |

David haig is pretty well known, Sophie Thompson I'm not so sure...especially on her name alone. She's one of those actresses that pops up in stuff and people recognise her face but I wouldn't say they really know who she is.
Richard kind I didn't know on his name alone, then I saw his face and realised I'm a fan of his.
Name recognition and face recognition aren't always the same thing

I saw the show at the Savoy and it was good, but not great. Would've given it 4 stars. Went to see it again for Richard Kind (BING BONG!!!!!!!) and absolutely loved the show. In my opinion, the new cast really improved the show. Definite 5 star the second time, loved every second of it!  |

Saw this on Sunday afternoon. Felt bad for Samantha Spiro, the best thing an otherwise laboured production. SDYRTB was the only time it ever achieved lift-off for me. Sat in second row of the stalls for only £17 - I guess business isn't going that well! Richard Kind was off and was obviously very disappointed as he was high on the list of the reasons why I wanted to go. Understudy was perfectly competent. The fella who played the Chicago gangster (forgot his name, apologies) was dreadful! Was as if some bloke had just been plucked from the street. Hardly knew his lines and when he did so they were delivered in such a stiff and stunted way. I guess there was some shuffling about between the cast. Although it's not this production's fault I just found the book incredibly disparate and unengaging - heresy I know! Wouldn't rush back to see this version or another production.

Can't remember who the Chicago gangster was. Yes that's it! He was played by a huge black guy but then at the Oliviers he was being played by a white actor so obviously different arrangement to then. I'd most definitely assume he was an understudy. I'm not saying this to be bitchy but he was just excruciating! Like a GCSE Drama performance. |

Sounds like you saw Cameron Johnson who plays the role in the UK Tour. He was on loan at the weekend with a few others.

Also, for anyone interested, the London cast sang Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat on that ITV Palladium programme tonight.
Fast forward to twenty minutes in and save yourself from hearing Bradley Walsh's swing opener. My ears have not yet recovered.

Rebel Wilson has just announced on Twitter that she's playing Miss Adelaide from 28 June to 21 August. I love her in the comedies she's done but not sure how I feel about this!
