So just got home after seeing this for the first time. I’m not sure it’s one for repeat trips for me. I really really enjoyed the first act, but it fell down a bit in the second half as the quality of songs dropped. I really disliked the He’s My Boy song (although my friend I went with disagrees) as the story went in a predictable direction. It Means Beautiful was the only real standout.
It absolutely shines in the script and performances. The whole theatre was laughing along and on their feet at the end. I just wish I liked the songs in the second act as much as they seemed to.

I just thought it was at a point where it was a very stop/start point in the show where it didn’t seem to naturally segue into the song. I was just thinking “well clearly this is going to be the emotional song from Jamie’s mum, and it wasn’t set up particularly well, like it was just shoehorned in there as a necessity without moving the story forward or telling me anything I didn’t already know about her character. It was the complete opposite of the segue into It Means Beautiful which felt very genuine. |

I don't think He's My Boy is standout in terms of songs, but in terms of sentiment and performance, it's pretty powerful.

I'm really pleased this is being shown in cinemas - I booked my ticket on Saturday, I was the first person to book at our local cinema!
I'm also in the living too far away from London group - I'd love to get down more regularly, but as others have said, money, time and work get in the way. There's also lots of local shows and tours I like to see. So I'm intrigued by this, and want to see it, but didn't know how/when I'd fit it in. Also, when I don't really know a lot about the show, it's a bit of a risk spending all that money on travelling if I end up not really liking it (when I know there are other West End shows I love). So this way I still get to see it - and although it's not always the same as seeing it in the flesh, I think it's great seeing the closeups we don't get from the back of the stalls, and also the camera ensures we're watching the right bit at the right time and not being distracted by what's going on in the corner of the stage.
I've seen Billy Elliot and Miss Saigon in cinemas (having previously seen them many times on stage) and thought they were great on screen. I'm looking forward to seeing this, as although I know very little about it, the positive reviews are making me want to go, as it sounds like a feel good show.

Picked up £25 day tickets (stalls L 7&8) for this today after repeatedly not winning the Today Tix lottery. I’d wanted to see it after the Olivier number, so I was already predisposed to like it. And I did, despite being able to list a large number of flaws. Yes, Jamie’s voice isn’t always great. Yes, there is essentially zero dramatic tension. Yes, they should sing the opening number for the curtain call and not the one they actually sing.
But it feels real and true. It’s lovely to see drag represented without heaps of “yassss Queen”. There’s something very English about it. Almost feels like it could have been a movie instead of a play. Reminded me a bit of Sing Street, with the same innocence and chutzpah. I loved it. It made me cry and laugh and be glad that we can make a musical about being yourself that runs the gamut from drag queens to Muslim girls.
Delightful. I’d go and see it again tomorrow night.

The metro were reporting that according to Dan G S, negotiations are underway to adapt the show into a film, and that Broadway is also a possibility. Whether either of those come to fruition remains to be seen though, I guess. I think could work well as a film, but I’m not sure it has the power to entice Broadway audiences. |

This is a fabulous show and Im so thrilled that people are loving it. I think it has the most heart of anything on the West End, and while it may not be the cause celeb or spectacle of Hamilton, I do hope that it gets extended again to give more people a chance to see it. I think its a show that can change minds and change hearts.

Saw this tonight for the first time and enjoyed it, but won't be rushing back.
Picked up a mid row N ticket from TKTS, £39.50 but had a theatre token from my birthday so only had to play £20. Great view, but I am six foot, and okay leg room. Grand Circle closed so only two levels open and thus felt busy. Odd to think that the Apollo used to be four levels, its years since the ceiling incident, guessing they won't bother reopening the balcony till they put in a show that needs it.
Had the understudy on for Jamie which I am quite glad about as the person who did it at the Olivers was a bit out of tune (though the Oliviers is a sound nightmare so perhaps the performer isn't too blame) and he did a great job, but the real stand outs for me were Jamie's mum and Pritti. Liked the set even if it did feel a lot like the one for Newsies (moving towers, with blinds going up and down) and the lighting was pretty but I felt there could have been a bit more darkness, it was all very bright. Though the choreo was great at points and a bit cringy at others, with some tight, fantastic moments and some bits being very forced.
From a sound point of view they had a bit of a mare tonight... Jamie managed to sweat out his main and back up mics for when he came on for the drag shop scene. Had to run off from behind the screen to get it seen to. Paul Groothuis' design is lovely in the quieter, slower moments but it all goes a bit to pot when it gets busier, lines being lost completely which from my mid-stalls seat shouldn't really be happening, doubly frustrating as their was clearly some whitty lyrics going on when you could catch them.
But over all it is a fun couple of hours, Don't Even Know It is a very catchy number, a great energy and always good to see a British show with so many US imports in town. 3.5 stars.

I felt there could have been a bit more darkness, it was all very bright I wonder if that was a deliberate thing, as in the teenage world, everything really is brighter. Only as you get used to it as adults do the colours of the world fade. Possibly... did mean that there was little contrast between moments. The school and the drag shop being the same brightness meant the drag shop didn't pop like I felt it could. |
