They began previews in October (I think?) so I wouldn't expect them to have a full cast change until the summer at the earliest, unless David Fynn is on a shorter contract of course. |

Being a massive Disney fan I have really enjoyed this show but always thought something was missing,couldn't put my finger on what though.Having seen the London production three times it was clear to me that it really is the Genie's show,especially when Trevor is on its lifted to a new level,but the rest of the show can lag when he's not around. All three times Dean has been on as Aladdin and I have always found him adequate,but not quite Disney enough,if that makes any sense. everytime Ive seen him do the dance numbers he always seems to be concentrating on the moves or not trying or something,and is definitely not smiling or projecting any Disney magic,and his chemistry with Jade is always off. Her Jasmine btw I find pleasant but have always wanted to see her with a different Aladdin,just in case my suspicions were right....
Anyway this brings me to yesterday were I blagged a last minute row b stalls ticket for 54 quid and decided to head down to London for a shot of Disney.To my welcome surprise I discovered via WestEndUndersudies that I'd finally get a different Al, as Antony Hewitt was on. Trevor was on as Genie so I wasn't that fussed but my God,What A difference another actor makes to the role of Aladdin,it was almost a different show!
I apologise to fans of the abs, Antonys were pretty non existant btw,but I cannot tell you how much more I enjoyed his portrayal. I found him immensely more likeable, charming,vulnerable and cheeky.I completely bought into the character in a way Dean has never made me feel. Proud of your boy is one of my favourite ever Disney songs but Dean never moved me singing it,I actually felt bored mostly.
Yesterday, I cried. His chemistry with Jasmine was miles better,making in turn Jades performance much better,and when he's in the cave of wonders he actually acts amazed and doesn't just wonder round like a codfish with his mouth open for 20 minutes!
In conclusion I really love this show with the right Genie and Aladdin,only took four goes to get the right mix lol,but think Ill wait till cast change for my 5th visit. Just hope they can find someone half as good as Trevor for the Genie.

Yes, I was completely underwhelmed by Dean when I saw Aladdin too. Apparently he tweeted that he was off to LA and that Aladdin was "over and done". Has he left the show already? I get the impression he is more interested in a singing/recording career. Like a lot of youngsters on the X Factor, The Voice etc. they seem to think it's an easier option to record an album, (it sells millions of course) and they sit back and the money rolls in. Doing 8 shows a week (or 12 shows a week in panto) comes as a bit of a shock and they are never really committed to it. Marcus Collins is another name that springs to mind, when he came second to Little Mix on the X Factor and now finds himself in musical theatre and panto or its back to hairdressing or whatever.

I'm waiting to see who's cast before I decide whether to see the show now or wait - I'm trying to avoid having the same disappointed reaction to the stage version of one of my childhood favourite movies as I did when I saw the Lion King, so I want to see a strong cast! |

I didn't mind Jade at all, I actually preferred her to Dean in all honesty, but maybe he was just having an off day! Thr ossue with Jasmine, her first song These Palace Walls, Jade can barely keep up with it, it just sounds like loads of words jumbled together because the chorus is fast. But I found her thoroughly enjoyable enough.

I think Dean checked out ages ago. Most of the things he tweets like 'Sorry guys Aladdin won't be performing tonight' make me do a small vom. Yes you as Aladdin won't be but someone else will! And it will probably better for it.
According to Stage Door principal wise Trevor, Jade & Jafar are staying the rest are going, including Jasmines attendants, Fortune Teller & a lot of the ensemble. Understandably it's a tough show. Mostly understudies are taking over , Interested to see Matthew Croke as Aladdin though.

Yes, it's a shame when so many young performers would kill to play a lead in a West End musical. Dean will find that these parts can sometimes be "once in a lifetime" to be the right age etc. when a show is cast. To be Aladdin in Aladdin has to be a dream role surely in a splashy WE show. So what's he going to do?
Matt Henry at Kinky Boots clearly realises that dream parts a few and far between and seems to be hugely enjoying staying on for a second year.

To be fair to him he wouldn't be the first to get a west end role and think they've made it. Laura Michelle Kelly turned down Broadway to focus on her solo career for example. I think its quite common for musical theatre performers to see musical theatre as second to a successful recording career. Sadly they sometimes don't really know when they are on to a good thing

Yes and Kerry Ellis to some extent also - wish she'd continue her once prominent leading lady career, though I'll admit she's hard to cast especially in revivals. She was bored off her tits when she did Nancy in Oliver! - I went back to see the show again just to see her and she was on auto pilot. Shame.

They were both on the verge of being known west end leading ladies and making a name for themselves and decided to take this risk with a solo career. Something which very rarely works out. Yes LMK did Broadway, but as a replacement so no Tony opportunity and I believe she pissed Cameron Mackintosh off by not doing Broadway straight away. |

BTW, while we're on the Aladdin subject, what are people thinking nominations wise as we near closer to Olivier nom day…
Best New Musical? Best Actor in a Musical for Dean? (How competitive is the lead actor race?) Best Supporting for the Genie dude (what's-his-name?) Any visual categories - I imagine we'll see its name come up for Best Sets or Best Costume or Achievement in Music or Choreography…? Thoughts?
