I'm a big fan of the soundtrack (my sister is an even bigger fan), but I've never been to one of these 'workshop' styled shows before.

Why is an established - if largely unsuccessful - three year old musical being "workshopped"? I'm not getting the concept.

Why is an established - if largely unsuccessful - three year old musical being "workshopped"? I'm not getting the concept. Well I suspect the writing team have had three years of thinking about changes they could have made, alternative numbers etc. And with the film being far less well known over here they probably want to test the show's viability and maybe even tweak the piece so it less reliant on the source material or something. The off Broadway production wasn't the success they hoped, so a workshop makes sense with that too.

So is the idea that this will eventually run as a fully realised and fully staged musical some time soon?

I would have also liked to check this. Couldnt book tix whilst in work and sold out now. Shame. I like the concept that TOP is pushing of selling seats for musicals in workshop status. 5 announced this year.

So weird they are doing this and Bonnie and Clyde too. Thought this was meant to be the home of new British musicals? Also weren't both Heathers and Bonnie and Clyde slated in their original New York runs?! Odd.

At the talk with Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Lin-Manuel Miranda, it sounded like they were struggling to find British musicals to fill it.

I've got two on the burner I just need some money so I can take time off to get them written.

Andrew Lloyd Webber had success with School of Rock in New York and he and the critics liked the idea of working as a 'work in process', like they did off Broadway with is show, where they just focused on the core material of the music and the book, that worked really well as School of Rock has recouped and now has a US Tour and a West End production. However he is going too literal with this idea.
Heathers got well received by theatre fans in New York, same as Bonnie and Clyde so it is nonsense to try this out for 5 dates in a cabaret studio, they should have gave both a two month run in the main auditorium and see how they both faired, if you are going to do a small workshop, sometime you have to unleash it on the public, so why wait?

Really enjoyed this last night. Not familiar with any previous version so not sure what's been changed but the cast was good and there were some fun moments. A few bits didn't quite make sense to me and felt a bit rushed but I imagine they might be clearer when fully staged.
This had the vibe of being prepared for a run on the main stage. ALW, Larry O Keefe and Kevin Murphy were all there and taking notes.

I was there last night also. I found myself absolutely loving the workshop format, it's a really great way to get to know a show. Love the new music and I didn't miss the cut song at all. A really fun evening, and now I'm going to see if I can attend more of these workshop performances. I already have a second ticket for Heathers so I'm keen to see the differences across the different days!
