Lads Sondheim has re-written it and Marianne Elliott is directing. I think it's in with a chance.

This is fantastic news! Both amazing performers, and I'm so glad that they've found a way to build in some non-straight characters given that attempts to do a production with Bobby as a gay man have all been vetoed. In the article linked by the official twitter account, it seems that Sondheim is genuinely excited by this and Jonny Bailey makes some very good points about why making Amy/Jamie the gay man rather than Bobby will work so well. Now far be it from me to pick holes in a production that has so many hot-to-trot hotties including future Mr Ryan, Jonny B AND La LuPone but for something that's set in New York now, doesn't it all seem a little bit too . . . white?

Not that I am condoning it but perhaps an all white cast is factually accurate based on how poorly people can intergrate
Plus in the original script is line about how Bobby has no friends frompuerto Rica. Sam Mendes got round this easily in the Donmar Version

But it’s not an ALL-white cast to be fair. Also really happy about the gay couple! |

Don’t know the narrative to be able to make an assertive comment, but isn’t it the quality versus quantity argument with better dramatic material being better than more female (but less interesting) characters.

Mmmmmmm? I was thinking about this yesterday, I didn't have the numbers but I had the impression men outnumbered women. Despite being the protagonist, Robert is somehow the least interesting of all the characters, but since they didn't want Bobbie to be queer the only think they could do was filling the stage with men, I guess. Hopefully the changes in the writing and the direction will give some shape and meaning to all the changes in the plot, especially if Elliott doesn't get too gimmicky. |

Yes the character of Bobby has always been the least well drawn of the characters in Company and the character (despite being played by some phenomenal and charismatic actors over the years - most recently Adrian Lester) has always vaguely annoyed me for reasons I could never put my finger on. Hence I thought Bobby might have been a closeted gay man for a time, but Sondheim has vigorously denied this interpretation.

When is this production set? I assume not 1970 (when the show premiered), an era when gay marriage didn't exist thereby rendering Alex and Jonny's nuptials an impossibility.
