The evening show in B'ham is a sell out tonight. A lot of shows in Birmingham seem to be selling really well at the moment. Shrek which has toured fairly regularly pretty much sold out, I Should Be So Lucky likewise and Withnail and I only has limited tickets available.

Personally, I think this is great show.
Not just because if the story, or the music or the fact that it was written by Willy Russell.
I think it's a great piece because it knows what sort of show it is. It works on so many levels and doesn't overcomplicate things.
I also think that it's simplicity is a great way to ease newcomers into theatre, specifically musical theatre.
I took my parents to see it when they were visiting at it's home in London, The Phoenix Theatre about a year before it ended and to this day my father, who rarely goes to the theatre, still tells anyone who will listen to him as to how great it was.
It's deep rooted in the North and I remember reading somewhere at the time of development that Willy Russell's only request was that the Liverpool accent was used by all actors on stage.
It has run for many years up and down the country and I predict it will continue to do so for many years to come.

I just wish the set and costumes got a bit of love and maybe a bit of an upgrade |

Mrs Johnstone (Niki Colwell Evans left)
Sammy (Tim Lucas left)
Perkins/understudy Eddie (Danny Knott left)
Neighbour/understudy Mickey (SuperSub Josh Capper left)
There might be one more, they are still negotiating their contract.

I would like to see Linzi Hateley back in the role of Mrs J. I loved her in the role when she was on tour with BB a few years ago.

I saw Mel C in London when she did her stint and she was excellent. Of course coming from Liverpool gave her an edge with the accent but she did give a great performance.

I don’t think she’s that haughty tbh and has certainly played tiny venues as a musician (Cardiff Glee Club was just a cube of sweat the night we saw her there; excellent).

Mel C might be happy to tour with a show but doing one night gigs is different to spending a week in a city/town. I wouldn't consider she is being haughty just that it might not appeal to her. The Spices all made heck of a lot of money from the band first time around and the reunion tours. Mel C has lived a sensible life and would have no need to work ever again I'd think. If she did a run as Mrs Johnstone it should be an event not just part of the tour schedule. I'd like to see her back in the role again. |

Sadly Keith Burns died unexpectedly on Friday evening.
He was (I believe) the first Narrator I saw in Blood Brothers in 2006 - and he left such an impression, he has been in my top 3 ever since, despite only seeing him once.
He started off as part of the original West End cast of Les Miserables. When Michael Ball fell ill, he stepped up as Marius, and played him to much acclaim for seven months.
His other credits included Miss Saigon, Cats, Carmen, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Rocky Horror Show, and roles in TV and film.
Keith was 60 years old.
