This show has puzzled me from the moment it was announced to be coming to the West End. I have never seen the movie, heard the music... literally know nothing about it. But is there going to be much of an audience for this?
Like, it is not one of those shows you hear about a lot, so I really don't know how to feel about it. |

Like, it is not one of those shows you hear about a lot, so I really don't know how to feel about it. Show Boat is a classic, it's not as revived as often as say Oklahoma! or My Fair Lady but it's not exactly unknown. |

It's one of the most important pieces in the musical theatre canon, when Show Boat premiered in 1927, it was the moment on Broadway where it was realised that musicals didn't just have to be light-entertainment or a musical revue or an operetta and started to incorporate dramatic storytelling, along with the spectacle on theatre. The *book* of the musical came to the forefront and the humour, seriousness, the production numbers and - most importantly - the songs helped to tell and develop the story. It was the complete integration of storytelling where all components completely depended on the libretto that shaped musical theatre into what it became during its Golden Age.
I'd say it should be on any MT purists/historian to-see list and I hope the public invest in it, too - but that can never be assured!

Well I was not aware of all of that, so fair enough for its history in musical theatre. Because, to be completely honest, when announced, I only had one reason to see this, and that was Gina Beck because I think she is incredibly talented. I had literally no knowledge of it. With the likes of the forementioned shows, I grew up with My Fair Lady the film so that is special to me and I was in a production of Oklahoma so that opened my eyes to that production in a different way to just being a fan of the show. It is now a show I love greatly.

Absolutely, both of those pieces are also so important in the shaping of musical theatre - especially Oklahoma with the integration dance - and I think it's great that the knowledge of those shows and the love of a performer can take you to a show that you know nothing about - not many people (outside of this board!) would be so open-minded.
I'm going on Tuesday night and I am just so incredibly excited to see this piece of history and try and think what on Earth audiences must've been thinking when watching this almost 90 years ago with no other musical like it to compare it to.

Id say it's fairly well known but the fact neither of the 3 film versions are out in the UK on DVD/Bluray reduces it's status.

Well, there are two magnificent movie versions ... and as others have said, this is a classic musical for many reasons. I am delighted to be able to have the chance to see a stage production at last. As for audio recordings, has anything surpassed the almost complete version which featured the late Jerry Hadley yet? |

It's one of my all time favourites, having watched my local am-dram company (with my dad as company pianist!) do it many many years ago. I volunteered as a programme seller, and sneaked into the balcony to watch every night of the week long run, and just fell completely in love with the music and the story.
With that in mind, I simply had to book a ticket as soon as it was announced for the west end. And so far, it's living up to my expectations. From down the front, it seems that there's a bit of work to be done to get the sound levels consistent, but the performances of the songs are sublime. I may have had something in my eye during Old Man River...

This is absolutely fantastic! I think they need to work on the sound during the big ensemble numbers as I found it very difficult deciphering the lyrics.
But the cast is great, Gina Beck, Chris Peluso and Alex Young as Ellie.
That act one finale is joyous and Ol Man River made me cry. Can't wait for act 2

A triumph! So glad this transferred, as I missed it in Sheffield.
Easily one of the best revivals of any show I've seen in a very long time. Fantastic cast, and a glorious orchestra. The show looks so at home at the New London and Alistair David's choreography is wonderful!
I've just booked to go again!

I was in BB, and while it was a great view of the stage you will miss a little bit of the action - there are some points where the cast come out into the aisles briefly. Also - be prepared to be bounced around during the dance numbers - the whole floor shakes! |

The show has been done in many different versions but the one I would recommend is its last Broadway incarnatation, the Hal Prince production labelled on Amazon as the Toronto Cast recording - it had an extended pre-Broadway run in Toronto. It does have its quirks. "How Do I Love You?" is sung as a lullaby by Parthy (Elaine Stritch) to baby Kim, for example. But it's quite complete and the cast is exceptional.
