You'd be surprised. There's a lot of love for Hercules. I would be very surprised. The show has been terrible in NYC and Hamburg, and the work put in between the productions hasn't done much to salvage it. I'm surprised they would consider bringing in a show that is either the Hamburg production or a new version of it. That's a big cost for a show in progress. I'd be surprised if it lasted a year. It doesnt have anything remotely near the number of fans that Frozen has. If you asked them, I suspect the general public woukldnt be able to name some of the songs in Hercules.

Wish they would do The Hunchback of Notre Dame instead. I think that would have much broader appeal and the La Jolla Playhouse production that went on to the Papermill Playhouse was wonderful! there is too much narration in Hunchback now. It's always done cheaply on a single set.
Now if they could do an english version of the original 'Der Glöckner von Notre Dame' with that amazing set they had, i would pay good money to see that on stage again.

Of course it's not as big as frozen, not many things are. However people on here have been reacting as though this is some tiny unheard of movie but for many millennials there's a lot of love for it. It's also a show that will appeal a bit more to boys so will open up a slightly different market than the princess shows that tend to appeal to more girls than boys (not exclusively obviously, but broadly).

This is now off. 2 friends of mine who were due to work on it were told this week that they are cancelling London plans as Hamburg is not selling well.

WHAT?
Edit: I mean, it's not surprising. Is there any other reasons than sales, like was it a shareholder kind of situation or producers pulling out? It's crazy they'd just end the London plans like that.

Makes sense.
It does make me wonder they started planning it in the first place..?

Plans get changed all the time, it's not that unusual.

Well where does this leave Drury Lane then? Is anything else ready to fill the gap or will Frozen do a bonus extension?

There's still 7-8 months to find a 2025 replacement since Elf will be going in November apparently.

Can something be “off” if it was never “on?”
This is TheatreFan level of “rumour!”

It’s gone from on to off in a week? They knew how Hamburg was selling a week ago but at that point it was on?
Doesn't sound like it was ever really on to start with.

Well it takes one moment to decide if something is on or off- so yeah.. it’s true. Unless the people I know who were in contract negotiations for london are lying. They aren’t.

If they were in contract negotiations it wasn’t “on”. They were just talking about it.

Disney just isn’t ‘it’ at the moment. They are rinsing their sure things constantly, presumably to pay for the development of new ones. If there has been a touring set for Frozen in the US (how on earth!?!) we should expect it pretty sharpish over here. For Poppins & The Lion King to be the titles that repeatedly sell is crazy to me, but I’m no barometer of taste.

If you're in contract negotiations...it means there's a show happening that you are in negotiations to be in so....it was on? 😂 Things can change that fast, as MrB says, it takes one conversation to decide to pull and that can be a matter of minutes.

Surely if they were as far along as having a theatre booked (they did) the intention was to mount the production?

They may also have chosen to wait until the live action remake comes out which is currently in development.

Wonder what the future of this show is then in English?
Direct-to-licensing, the theatre equivalent of direct-to-VHS... like that Hercules sequel.

Stage Entertainment might still try to make a go of it in the Netherlands. All Disney shows that ran in Germany would also turn up there eventually (right now they're getting Frozen which is past its sell-by date in Germany) and the Dutch shows are usually a limited run for one season anyway, so they wouldn't lose face. It may also sell better there with less competition in the same town and with some more tweaks to the show. Jeangu Macrooy, who just played Jesus in the Dutch tour of JCS, would be a fabulous Hercules I think.
Elsewhere... yea, direct-to-licensing I presume. Ancient Greece is presently popular again in literature with many myths getting new feminist interpretations and on stage Hadestown is doing great, but probably won't be available for licensing any time soon. So I can say a big interest in Hercules.
