Hamilton limped to a year and didn't move to a different city. I take it stage entertainment don't do dynamic pricing? I would guess they're the German/Dutch equivalent of ATG? No, but many good shows didn't - Kinky Boots and Anastasia spring to mind (and Rebecca in Stuttgart). And no, no dynamic pricing, no proper 40-50% off on the day off, no rush tickets, no very cheap seats here and there for fans who like to go repeatedly - all this while the dress circle of the theatre was (at Hamilton) often completely closed and lots of availability in the stalls. Stage Entertainment specifically doesn't seem to get that in the first 2-3 months "bums on seats" are all that matters, so that WOM will spread. Instead they rather play in half-empty houses. Funny enough Stage Entertainment Netherlands do far more generous discounts - we saw Anastasia and the new Aida in Scheveningen for about 60 Euro each in the front stalls. Since Scheveningen is closer for me, discounts are better and the overall quality usually better, we tend to wait until shows go there to see them. Although I'll say for Hamilton that for once they did everything right and I'm glad we caught it (my Mom wanted to go, because she was curious about Hamilton but knew her English was too bad to see it in London or NY). But the thing is... Hamilton did get a lot of positive feedback from those who DID see it.The (financial) hurdle was just too high for most people to go and see for themselves. Hercules is getting a tepid response as most. And Hercules may be a popular property, but not half as popular as Lion King or Frozen, so a third Disney musical was simply overload in Hamburg. And they did next to no marketing to the general mainstream as per usual. Moulin Rounge in Cologne meanwhile hosted an episode of Germany's equivalent of "Strictly come dancing" from the theatre, with the big opening number of the show on televison in its original setting and the dancing couples then using the various stage sets of the show for their numbers. THAT's how you shift tickets. But Stage seems to think that putting up posters in town and having some vapid influencers around for free social media marketing is enough. It's not. So... it may do better in London with better marketing, especially if it's overhauled again and cast well - there's certainly an appetite for Disney and it has no real competition since Frozen will be gone (and Lion King caters mostly to tourists) and there's a lack of big new family shows presently (apart from Starlight Express, but that will have been running for some time by the time Hercules opens).

I’m not into Disney but love this score. I’m in. I would definitely book for this.

Great response, thank you.
The failure of Beauty and the Beast in London certainly seemed to give Disney a cold chill, it failed despite winning the Olivier, maybe too big theatre. I think would have thought that Aida and the Continental production of Tarzan would have done well.
London has too big theatres or too small and a few mid size houses unlike New York that has man6 mid size houses. London could do with a couple of mid size theatres. I wonder how many shows London has missed because of lack of availability of a house. Aida was one and was going to go into the Savoy but just didn’t.

They are apparently doing a lot more work on it following Hamburg. My hope is that involves chucking out the entire physical production. It looks terrible

I still remember it not doing great though. When shows transfer, they always change in some way. If it's going Broadway -> West End, it will always shrink just by fact of our city was built quite a long time ago... while it's true there's more mid-sized venues on Broadway, the West End still has about a dozen theatres I can think of that have a seat count around a thousand. The real big thing is just scheduling. There are about 30+ rumoured shows trying to get into a theatre right now, and all of them want big long runs... that's a lot!

No the original BATB played the Dominion Theatre for 18 months about 1997 - 1999, the tour was a revival that played the great London Palladium about 3 years ago.
London could do with a couple of theatres that have 1400 seats.

I'm very intrigued as to why Hercules would be put in such a big theatre replacing Frozen, which is the far more popular property...
It may have a fan following among 90s kids but it's a bit of a cult favourite compared to Disney's bigger titles. Perhaps a relatively short run planned before bringing in something else?

Funny (ish) story - I had no idea this existed until MJT went to see it at that place in the US (not Broadway). The film also completely bypassed me.
Appreciate you can't draw evidence from n=1 but surely this will be a massively hard sell for TRDL? Nowhere near the name recognition of Frozen, Lion King, Aladdin?
Similar level of interest as Prince of Egypt (was that even Disney? Think it wasn't)??
What's the score like? No cast recordings as yet....

The score for the film was wonderful but the new stage version has a lot of new songs. Very gospel oriented with a bit of pop and traditional musical theatre. I think the German cast recording comes out this week.

I have been! I do seem to see people talk about it a lot. Also see quite a lot of Brits talk about the German version which (as someone that follows the big musical German scene) is pretty unusual! (Though still think TRDL is a push but shall deffo go with an open mind!)

Hercules wasn't a massive hit back in 1997 but it gained popularity through home media and streaming. It's similar to Newsies being a massive bomb as a film but a hit as a stage musical.

I think if they start it in Feb and run through to end of Summer 2026, that will be a very good run for them. There’s lots of love for the movie and family shows always do well. Might appeal to families with boys more than Frozen did too and more teenage audiences.

Wish they would do The Hunchback of Notre Dame instead. I think that would have much broader appeal and the La Jolla Playhouse production that went on to the Papermill Playhouse was wonderful!

Yeah the Vienna production (which I think was based on the Stage Entertainment one - is that the same as La Jolla/Papermill?) was fantastic.
