Not a new musical but Iβm hearing that ALW wants a West End revival of Sunset Boulevard with a major star attached. Apparently everything is already set and ready to go. I'd love that - but I'm doubtful that's happening.

Could it be the retrospective concert that they did at Curve in 2021?

Sunset has been done to death over the past five years, and not sold massively well in any of its guisesβ¦heck, not even Glenn Close could make it a sell out. Iβd much rather something else was revived.

Iβd much rather something else was revived. That may have been due to the ticket prices, I had to pay 150 quid for a decent view. That said, it was pretty full. Not my favourite Norma, vocally, having previously seen Patti & Elaine, but her acting was superb, as expected. Iβd even go to see her in a straight play version of the film.

I didnβt necessarily mean just the Coliseum run; the Ria Jones tour didnβt set the box office alight, nor the Alexandra Palace thing. Glenn was magnificent.

Yeah the tour didn't do massive business, not helped by a weaker cast and production. They'll need a big name to sell the savoy for a decent run.
With Glenn Close it was an event and one of the best performances I've ever seen, that will be hard to be bettered.

I do love Sunset but I agree you need a HUGE star to sell this. Is it really worth it when weβve had so many iterations in the last few years?

At this point I don't think he even cares about ticket sales, he's 75 and rich enough. It's his pride and ego he wants to save. Sunset is a far better show than Bad Cinderella musically and book wise. Paired with a big star and perhaps he thinks it will some what heal his reputation with the press. He would only need to do a limited run, that way it would lose less money if it fails.

Jane "Ey oop, I'm ready for my close up, Chuck" McDonald Hannah Waddingham after her triumph presenting Eurovision... She could be good but not big enough to sell alone. Maybe paired with someone like Jake Gyllenhal as Joe it could be a seller.

Jane "Ey oop, I'm ready for my close up, Chuck" McDonald Hannah Waddingham after her triumph presenting Eurovision... Surprisingly, Hannah Waddingham is a name I've been seeing thrown around to lead Norma alongside Catherine Zeta Jones, Toni Collette, Cate Blanchet and even Meryl Streep, though she's probably unlikely, I hear she's doing something in London.

Hannah would absolutely smash it as Norma, but iβm not sure it would be much of a challenge for her. If Joe was cast with somebody meaty it might be worth it, but these seem like beats that Hannah has played before.

I've been wanting CZJ to do Norma for years. They may have aged out now but Ramin or Hadley Fraser I always thought would be great Joe's.

Would Catherine Zeta Jones be a good fit? I think so.

This is exciting! One of Lloyd Webber's best scores and shows in my opinion. (He needs to go back to writing a big sweeping, romantic score like that, and do what he does best).
Intrigued to see who the 'huge star' will be. Any genuine insider info on this?
The ENO/Glenn Close production will take some beating, even though I didn't particularly rate her. The memory of the spotlight hitting her just as the orchestra swelled in 'As If We Never Said Goodbye' still gives me goosebumps at the thought.

Hannah Waddingham, Catherine Zeta Jones, Toni Collette, Cate Blanchet, Vanessa Williams just some of the names in the running. Set to be a limited run, a couple months I believe. A couple of months? So not a full production then. Of those I can only see CZJ and Cate Blanchet being big enough to be a big draw

I have to say that, with the exception of Cate Blanchet, none of the other names particularly excite me!
