Have Will Martin or Rebecca Wright ever performed in the West End? I ran across a couple Youtube videos of them performing a couple of songs from the 2009 New Zealand tour ... would have really enjoyed seeing them perform these live. I was lucky enough to have seen the original London production several times and will be returning to London this coming October and really looking forward to seeing this new production.

Some single seats for Starlight appear to be on sale at a reduced price of £29. I’m already booked for the end of August but temptation got the better of me tonight and I had a look at availability in the opening weeks. Was surprised and delighted to see some single seats reduced down to £29 across the first few days of preview shows. I ended up booking for the 5.30pm show on June 16th which had the most and best £29 seats available. I got a really great seat in row M of the right hand locomotive section which on other dates is priced at between £98 and £110 so I’m well happy. Didn’t look to see how far ahead they are reducing them but definitely first couple of weeks.

Ended up getting a seat in row L in the Locomotive section for the bargain price of £29. I’m so glad I held out now from buying when tickets first went on sale. |

As the opening of Starlight Express is fast approaching so thought it was a good time to rediscover the original cast recording from 1984. Bear in mind the last time I listened to the cast recording was on a cassette so gives you an idea of how long ago it was.
Well it's bloody bonkers isn't it!
AC/DC is like some kind of acid trip.
But I loved it and its brought back so many memories of when I saw it in the 80s.
First time I saw it was from one of the seats right in the middle of the race track and it was like nothing I'd ever seen before. I also remember that the music was really, really loud.
So 40 years older I am really looking forward to seeing it again in July.

I saw it for the first time in London in early 2001, then saw it again on closing night in 2002 (having obsessed over the OLC recording inbetween). I then saw the tour multiple times, and saw the Bochum production last year. I have to say that I enjoyed the Bochum production the most, and I can't wait to see what they give us this time. I know it'll be different but, as someone who was initially sceptical about the changes they made to Bochum and then ended up loving it, I'm crazy excited for it.

Funnily enough I used to stare at that CD in Dress Circle as a small kid and couldn't buy it as didn't have enough pocket money. Sad times. Years later was out of print but finally found a good quality copy on e-bay. Yeah, certainly sounds more like London in the 80's than the OLC. But it's different again with very heavy 80's electric drums and synth sounds. London at the time was also quite electronic sounding but also with lots of brass and woodwind! (I appreciate this is info 99% of people won't be interested in. I am a massive sound and orchestration geek!) |

I've just been searching through Apple Music to see if any other versions of the cast recording available on streaming devices (sadly, only the OLC and the 'New' Starlight Express recordings are on there, however I did come across a real gem - Shirley Bassey singing a big band version of the title track. It's well worth a listen!

The Bochum live recording from 1991 is the best in terms of capturing the full show as it sounded in the theatre. The orchestrations are fantastic, and it has the full band with lots of brass which I love! I’m curious to hear the new orchestrations, but with a severe lack of actual instruments, I’m preparing to be a little disappointed. I just hope it’s loud in the theatre, like it was at the Apollo Victoria!

Nice to hear a piece on Starlight on BBC Radio 4 earlier. They talked about the 40th anniversary of the show with Richard Stilgoe and interviewed the 18 year old actor who will be playing Rusty, who sounds like a lovely guy! Can’t believe the first preview is in 1 week!

"You will not believe what is happening in this big black, yellow and white box. One week to go and @starlightexpressldn will be blowing the roof off the building with the power of diesel, electric, steam and one more big surprise! The excitement is building up"
Will be interesting to see what the big surprise is.

Since coal is no longer an option due to global warming, the final "steam will have a second coming" won't fly anymore.
I always thought Rusty should transform into Sunny the solar powered engine for the happy end.
On a more serious note, I am ignoring their social media now - the modern kind of "advertising" saying nothing at all makes me actively angry. Why not SHOW us the auditorium? Why not a few costumes? Why not show Rusty and Pearl in costume singing a few lines? At this stage - just one week from opening - this would surely create more buzz than this nonsensical "oooh, you won't believe it!" "We got suuuch a surprise for you!" stuff.
