I really loved Janie Dee in NTLive Follies, but I'm sorry to say she was having trouble at the performance I saw. She dropped so many lines that I never could buy into her Desiree. It's a shame because I really thought she fit the role. She's still forgetting lines? When I saw her do the role 6 years ago she blanked in Send In The Clowns so much that they MD had to stop & re-start the orchestra. That was a one-off concert so having line problems then was somewhat forgivable but if she's still having problems 6 years later! |

With only doing a few performances and sharing the stage with other shows, I imagine it's not a lavish production, but anyway I'm crossing the Peaks next week to see it. The Pennines last week and now the Peaks.

No but as this is her third go at it I assume she'd be brushing up on her lines before each production so she's presumably had three tries at learning them.... |

Just back from my second Weekend in the Country, this time not over the Pennines but over the Peaks to Buxton, and it was gorgeous and shimmered, and due to the fragmented nature at performing at the festival, a little rough round a few edges - the whole story of the hip bath vanished, making the subsequent song a bit of clairvoyant story telling, but never mind, and the purgatory and paradise got mixed up, but beautifully sung and played. in no way a poor relation to the Opera North production. A pretty straightforward traditional birch tree, shimmery floor and cutout house affair, though it did have a flown piano which was interesting, but a fine production of a true masterpiece with not a duff note nor duff word in it. And when the orchestra swelled during reprise of Clowns, I let out a gasp of pure emotional, uncontrolled joy.

I was there last night and thought it was good but not great. Sadly for me the weak link was Janie Dee who I felt didn't convey the required magnetism to make us understand Frederik's obsession nor the vulnerability needed when Clowns comes along. She sang well and I didn't notice any line flubs but her performance felt a bit straight down the line for me. Hip bath plot line fully in place in the evening!
Thought the quintet worked well in this production and the orchestra was on fine form, with a well behaved audience who didn't talk through the overture. A nice night at the theatre without being exceptional. Lovely theatre though and nice to see Buxton restaurants staying open for post-theatre dining (Chichester take note)

I was there for the last night yesterday as well. Thoroughly enjoyed it but I have to agree to the weak link for me was Janie Dee. There were three instances of line fluffs I spotted one in song and two in scenes. In act 1 I wasn’t too impressed with Petra (the husband liked her though) but in act 2 she was astounding. One of the best, if not the best Millers Son I have seen! Also particularly enjoyed Madame A, got elderly Patsy Stone vibes from her ! All in all it was a really pleasant night at the theatre.

Jo Barstow's 'death' was a bit more subtle over in Leeds, and much more moving, but I enjoyed Garielle drake. The more i see this show the more i think that the best female part is Charlotte - splendid in Buxton.
