Buxton is FAR, and having seen Janie last summer AND 6 years ago, I am holding off till the rest of the cast is announced.
2020 has changed me - I'd normally have booked before finishing the article!

I've wanted to go to this theatre for a long time. Only an hour on the train from Manchester, and 10 min walk from the railway station. As I couldn't see this musical last year at Leeds Playhouse, this is good for a Saturday trip in July.

It is a lovely venue and fairly intimate feeling through the auditorium too.

Perfect ... Gorgeous theatre, I don't live too far and would love to see Janie in this. Also, love Paul Kerryson's work so should be great. I was disappointed to have Leeds cancelled so this is a treat.

It is a lovely space. I played the Major General in Pirates there many centuries ago.

Very interested in this - looks like a lovely venue and an opportunity to spend a weekend in the country. Not sure I quite need another ALNM right now, but I am a fan of Ms Dee, and this might be a nice break. Signed up for newsletter and let's see how pricing looks when it's announced.

Given it's only four performances spread over three weeks I'm guessing it's unlikely to be a fully staged production. Agree with David perfect location for a weekend in the country - and quite near Bakewell and Chatsworth - although without a car not so easy to get around the Peak District.

Oh this sounds great! I moved to Sheffield recently, so this isn't crazy far from me actually. Does anyone know if there is an exact date when tickets are going on sale? The website says box office reopens in April. I'll add a reminder note

Key dates here: buxtonfestival.co.uk/news-and-blog/buxton-international-festival-2021-booking-datesAt 1,000 feet above sea level, Buxton is the highest market town in all England. Presumably that means it's also the highest university town in all England. Not a lot of people know that. After what felt like 30 years as a building site, that swanky new hotel and spa on The Crescent finally opened last year...only to be forced to close again within weeks. Maybe there will be offers? Who knows what public transport will be like post lockdown, but pre-CV Buxton had a half-decent bus network running into, and through, the glorious Peak District. Buxton itself is not in the Peak District because, we were taught at school, it is encircled by quarries. Again, not a lot of people know that! 🙂

I'd love to see this but Cambridge to Buxton by public transport is ghastly - I've done it twice for the Gilbert & Sullivan Festival - so sadly I don't think I'll be able to.

Who are these people? Not heard of any of them except Janie Dee 😮 David Leonard replaced Bertie Carvel as Trunchball in London's Matilda (and was very good) but I would assume the others have maybe come from a more opera background?

Tim Walton was in Rags at the Hope Mill, City of Angels at the Donmar and a few original casts

David Leonard was also Billy Flynn in Curve Leicester's production of Chicago, directed by Paul Kerryson (and choreographed by Drew McOnie), as well as being a cornerstone of Berwick Kaler's York panto company.
Tim Walton has worked in numerous West End productions and tours over the last twenty years (he was a very good Harry in one of the recent Mamma Mia tours) but also has some opera/operetta credits. I believe Daniella Sicari is indeed an opera singer who has been in previous Buxton festival productions.

Do we think that if we open up in June as planned that more tickets may become available for this as its currently sold socially distanced?

Do we think that if we open up in June as planned that more tickets may become available for this as its currently sold socially distanced? It appears possible. Unlike some venues which have promised to stick to socially distanced seating if it's been sold as such (to placate nervous customers), the Buxton Opera House has this clause: Although that may upset some customers, it's within their T&Cs. buxtonoperahouse.org.uk/booking-information/booking-terms-conditions

I _think_ they have had a rejig of the seating plan over the weekend to split up some of the unsold larger bubbles into smaller bubbles so it might be worth checking again today.

I saw this last night and heartily recommend. The gorgeous Frank Matcham-designed theatre is a bonus. Well worth the trek up to Buxton.

Well, I had a lovely time last week. I spent Wednesday to Friday in Leeds, and on Thursday I saw Opera North's production of this show. Then spent Friday to Sunday in Manchester with Saturday being spent in Buxton seeing their production. All around, it was a wonderful extended weekend.
So:
I saw the Saturday evening performance from the last row of the Gallery - the highest circle. I had a bird's eye view with no obstructions, but it was cramped and very hot. My legs were still sore the next day. I've put off saying too much about this production, because my enjoyment was unfortunately derailed by my discomfort. I kept leaving the world of the show, and was more judgemental than I otherwise would've been. I'll keep this review light though.
I really loved Janie Dee in NTLive Follies, but I'm sorry to say she was having trouble at the performance I saw. She dropped so many lines that I never could buy into her Desiree. It's a shame because I really thought she fit the role.
The Quintet - as I've since learned they are called - where much less intrusive in this production. They were lovely and were only present when appropriate. The floor had a polishing that reflected which made their waltzes look particularly beautiful. It only made me more mad at the Leeds production's Quintet - too silly. They're a lovely device if used sparingly, it seems to me.
The rest of the cast was good enough. Though, with the exception of Henrik, I preferred the Leeds cast. In general I preferred the Leeds production. But! What a delightful privilege it is to get to compare and contrast two productions mere days apart! It feels great to be back seeing live theatre, and I'm glad to say that this show really is a good one. These productions have more than proved what good and versatile material it is.
