Really enjoyed listening to this. Depending on ticket prices, I might be tempted to go and watch this live at the RAH next year.

Last show of my London week finds me at the Royal Albert Hall for tonight’s concert. First time here for a concert so hopefully it will be a good night to end my theatre binge holiday on.

Show number 12 of my London theatre week and as my last one, it was a fantastic way to end the week. Jason Manford and Ruthie Hensall as tonight’s hosts were great. There was plenty of laughs and singing from both of them in this incredible showcase of west end MT talent. With a full ROH, the atmosphere was electric as the different show casts belted out hit after hit. As my first time at the venue, I couldn’t fault it. Great FOH staff, being able to get a decent central seat up in the gods and as a concert venue the acoustics in there are fantastic. It was one of those nights where everything fell into place to have a wonderful night of musical theatre.
Unfortunately, there was no programme or running order list available but from memory in no particular order -
Opening Overture from Anything Goes Anything you can do (Jason and Ruthie) There can be miracles Maybe this time (Ruthie) Defying gravity (Louise Dearmann) This is the moment (Jason) The Winner Takes it all (Mazz Murray) Jersey boys medley It’s my life / can’t stop the feeling (&juliet) She used to be mine (lucie jones) Proud Mary (TINA) Let it go (Sam barks) Long way home (Danny Mac / Aimie Atkinson) When I grow up (Matilda) Welcome to the rock (CFA) You and me (BOM) You will be found (DEH) Power of love (BTTF) Circle of life Lion king) Far too late (Cinderella) ?
As a nice touch Ruthie got Sam Tutty to make a little acceptance speech after YWBF for his Olivier award. By Sam’s reaction, I don’t think it was planned. He certainly got a great reception.
Listening to these songs with a big orchestra and choir from mountview school really was worth the ticket. Dancing to Justin timberlake on a Sunday night in the RAH really wasn’t what I was expecting to do tonight but hey, you only live once and I had a blast so what the heck. Having had a great time tonight, hopefully the organisers will schedule one for next year and based on tonight’s entertainment I’ll certainly be booking a ticket.

Was there last night too, in cheap choir seats which I always quite like in the RAH when I'm not fussed about having a great view.
I thought it was a good night out with some great performances, but the sound was absolutely appalling. The worst I've ever heard in the venue, and it's notoriously bad. I remember the sound being rich and full at Kylie's Christmas concerts there but I've seen quite a few concerts where the sound really isn't acceptable and this was one of them. I do so love the venue though, it's just beautiful.
Come From Away and the Mountview Choir's songs were basically inaudible which was a shame. Highlights for me were Lucie Jones absolutely slaying She Used To Be Mine. I love her Jenna because she's not afraid to get ugly and really act that song in the show, as it should be, but it was wonderful hearing her perform it here in a concert style. She really showed off what a wonderful vocalist she has become. It gave me goosebumps! Mazz Murray put in a great vocal, even if her acting consisted of little more than Evita hands every other word. The Dear Evan Hansen cast and the Mountview choir brought the house down with You Will Be Found, though I do wish they'd air some more songs from that show tbh. The ladies from the Prince Of Egypt sang beautifully though I've still not much desire to see the show. Carrie Hope Fletcher also sang beautifully - startlingly so, from a technical point of view. Nothing can disguise the fact that the song isn't up to much though.
Lowlights were the cast of & Juliet. I mean... where do I even start. Will actively avoid the show after that display. Poor, poor Cassidy Janson! Danny Mac is also just not vocally up to the standard of a West End leading man and was completely out sung by Aimee Atkinson. They also had the chemistry of a couple of fire extinguishers. Ruthie and Jason's "Anything You Can Do..." was painful too. Truly one of the worst musical theatre songs of all time. I could probably have done without Jason's end of pier reading of "This Is The Moment" too.
Jury's out on Sam Barks' Elsa. Her vocal was excellent and she made it sound easy but I was getting a bit of a vibe that she was going through the motions. These family shows aren't really my bag, but I am still quite keen to see Frozen.

Like Craig I thought the sound was awful. I was stalls stage left ironically by the sound desk and couldn’t hear much of the Jason/Ruthie dialogue. Some of the contributers were totally overpowered by the orchestra and I really couldn’t distinguish what the Mountview choir were singing so I’m looking forward to listening again on Sunday to hear the bits I missed!
