Yes ok, an Oscar Wilde season but let's have an Orton season. We can then have a debate about which writer has influenced development of British drama more, can't we?

Yes, it was Sam French who plays Harry. About 10 minutes in he turned to the audience and said he wasn't feeling well, and then fainted. We were taken out the auditorium and had about a 35 minute show stop. I think most audience members were surprised that the show continued, but to his credit his performance after the break was flawless, and he delivered on the physical and verbal comedy. I thought the show was great, but did undoubtably lose some audience momentum with the long stop. I'm just very pleased that we did end up seeing the full show, and I thought he gave a great performance. Oh, and this meant I met fellow theatreboarder Abby, so not all was bad. I happened to be at that performance and was also surprised the show went on, especially as no understudy was lifted, but conversely Sam French who proved to be a tropper was wrong to go back on, he should have been checked out by a doctor in a medical premises first, he collapsed for a reason. The play was mildly amusing, however I am not keen on farce, but saying that it has sold very well and Joe Orton is a prominent playwright, so easily could transfer to the West End. |

Well. I just loved this. I thought it was hilarious. Dark, filthy, funny and farcical.
Fabulous cast who all play it in rather a stylised way that works with the absurdity of the piece. Special mention to the foxy Sam Frenchum and Sinead Matthews who I've never been fond of previously but I thought she was sensational here. Sexy and fabulously funny, if the Park Theatre was eligible I'd be delighted with an Olivier nomination.
The corpse almost stole the show.
Go see it. Oh no, you can't.

I am sorry I didn't get around to seeing this. I suppose it may make a return or possibly even transfer, but perhaps that's only wishful thinking.

Given how well it sold and how long since the last revival, I'd've thought it promising for a transfer. When I saw it recently, I was amazed how familiar most of the lines were, but whether that's because they are just very memorable or for some other (unknown) reason I have no idea. I don't usually even remember everything I've seen after a year or so, let alone the content! Plus I agree that Sinead Matthews was good in this; I think the Irish accent helped disguise her usual rasping and squeaking.
