I saw this a couple of weeks ago and I thought they got the casting spot on. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it. I really don't see what is wrong with Les Dennis. He is an older man playing the part of an older man, he's hardly going to be jumping all over the stage.
I must admit that I have been a fan of Mark Umbers since I saw him in Merrily and I thought he and Scarlet made a lovely couple. I did see this in Chichester a few years ago but I don't remember it being so funny.

Saw it tonight- dreadful. Ugly cheap set. Scarlett Strallen is utterly wrong. Playing it like Mary Poppins. All of the accents are problematic, worst one- Katherine Kingsley mangling every joke. And to think Jane Krakowski was so sexy and effortless in the role in NYC. One of my worst shows of the year. Utterly charmless and a huge disappointment. I'm glad you agree about Mary Poppins! |

I heard it would have transferred at the Noël Coward Theatre for Christmas time, but it was a few months ago.

Not the Menier Chocolate Factory production, but they uploaded on youtube the Olivier Award performance of the 1995 Savoy revival if anyone is interested
But it's great to see that Callum Scott Howells is having success with It's a Sin, he was great in the MCF production

Ohh I loved it too!
Granted not as good as the Broadway production (that set was amazing) but for the money they have to put shows on, it was great!

I really liked it too, it felt quaint and charming. Loved the spinning rotating set pieces, very clever on a postage stamp sized stage, and thought the performances were good

That set was glorious. It had 3 revolves which is pretty complex for a small theatre.
I remember one Saturday matinee the revolves stuck just before the show started. They had to cancel the performance and the cast then reset the whole show without the revolves so by the evening performance they were ready to go with static scenery. They did an amazing job.

Unfortunately the Menier didn't inform ticket holders the show was cancelled until arrival at the theatre which, given their matinees are 3.30pm, meant it was too late to get to any other show. 4 hours having to kill time wandering around London before the WE evening show I was booked for wasn't much fun and, living outside London, the waste of one of a limited number of show slots was very annoying. I did enjoy She Loves Me when I finally got to see it a few weeks later. |

I remember there was a show stop when I saw it just before the end of Act 1 - I think a bit of scenery had stopped moving and Scarlett Strallen was possibly stuck on a ladder?
I remember it happening only because I was already slightly panicked given the late matinee start that I wouldn't have much time to get over to Victoria and grab something to eat before Rachel Tucker's last show in Wicked. In fact I think I got a taxi across to Victoria in the end, grabbed a quick McDonalds and missed the board pre-show Wetherspoons meet up!

I loved this production - I found myself beaming throughout! I just wish I'd had the chance to see it again. I'd recently watched the filmed Broadway production, which I also loved, before going and I found I preferred parts of the Menier production despite the smaller scale. In particular, Katherine Kingsley's 'Trip to the Library' was a very different approach but I thought it was hilarious and a real highlight.

I came across what looked like a television studio production on YouTube that starred Gemma Craven. Does anyone know anything about this. It looked like it was late 1970s. Was it based on a stage production or made for television?

I disliked it at MCF. Some of the casting was poor that not even the revolves could distract from. This afternoon I watched the TV version. I still didn't like it https: moderator edit: video clip depicting entire performance removed. You kind find this by searching YouTube for “she loves me 1978”.
