One of the cast of Starlight recently posted that apparently the show doesn’t actually have a ‘hierarchy’ of covers. They decide who goes on purely by who logistically makes sense for that show. In the initial London production, during the 1990's, we had 3 to 5 covers for every role but there was a rota which changed monthly. You could be on for the role a few performances one month then not be first in line to go on again until many months later. I hated that. But I did manage to be covering one of the leads when the main actor in the role went on holiday AND there was a 9-show-week thanks to school holidays. I felt like I won the lottery.

Yes same in Bochum, they don't really have 2nd/3rd/4th covers they just have a pool to pick from depending on circumstance. And in the programme covers for each role are listed in alphabetical order.
They also have this very odd system in Bochum that I've not seen anywhere else where leads (in big roles) cover the next lead up in order of importance. So if Pearl was off, Dinah could cover Pearl. Carrie/Belle could cover Dinah and a swing could cover Carrie/Belle. Rather than just have an ensemble or swing member cover Pearl. Though sometimes that happens too.
Before the 30th, Greasball and Electra used to cover Rusty which was bonkers. They've stopped that now and the first person (in terms of stage time) to cover Rusty is Caboose.
Not sure there's a musical anywhere else on earth where the entire cast and not just the swings/ensemble have to learn so many roles! The only ones to learn only one role were Rusty, Pearl and Poppa pre 30th, chucking in Electra and Greaseball post.
(No idea if this is normal in Germany or just a Starlight thing).

I am pretty sure that the only concrete 2nd/3rd/4th covers are for the leads but I could be wrong. Speaking of this, Asher who’s 2nd cover Rusty is debuting today!

Speaking of this, Asher who’s 2nd cover Rusty is debuting today! Go Asher! I had a hunch that his Rusty debut would be happening soon, but I picked the wrong day this weekend to visit. I will have to console myself by finally seeing "Why Am I So Single?" this afternoon. Hopefully someone will report back about how brilliantly Asher does and I'll get to see him as Rusty at a later date.

Speaking of this, Asher who’s 2nd cover Rusty is debuting today! should’ve clarified that the concrete 2nd/3rd/4th covers thing was referring to the cover system (or rather, lack of a concrete one unless it comes to a few of the more major characters) for the Wembley production!! Doubt anyone thought I was on about Bochum in here but just in case

This has probably been covered a million times before, but part of Electra's Megamix song (which is originally "No Comeback" from previous iterations of Starlight Express) is virtually ABBA's Lay All Your Love On Me
I only noticed because I saw both Starlight Express and Mamma Mia recently
