Updates from the tour have been a bit slow as of late, as cast members are being asked not to share that they are performing until after the show.
Casey Al-Shaqsy was on as Elphaba for both shows last Saturday (25th May, 2024) and took over midshow at the matinee the following day, performing at the evening show also. For both shows that Sunday, Megan Gardiner was on as Glinda, Stephanie Lindo was on as Nessarose and Julie Cloke was on as Madame Morrible (26th May, 2024).
Casey was on as Elphaba for the matinee today, and Maddison Firth is on as Elphaba for the evening show (29th May, 2024).

Sitrep: Still haven't managed to catch Laura, but Casey's still ace. Such great power to her voice.
And personally I think Megan Gardiner does a better Gaahhhhlinda.

Caught the tour in Southampton last night and it was fun as always and sparkly and slick as it should be.
One gripe though, maybe my aging ears but it felt like the sound mix was a bit off. Very amped music and consequently the leads were practically screaming at times to be heard over it, to the detriment of clarity. Seemed to be running faster than I remember it too, slowing down to normal pace for defying gravity mercifully so the drama of that landed but it had felt like a rattle up to then.
I say all this because the cast were excellent but it feels like they were being fought by the production a bit. Which is a pity as when given the space they really shone. It's a high energy show that's at its best when it's being given the energy it deserves but they can pull the volume and the tempo back a bit and trust their cast a bit more to deliver, which they all did.
Chistery being a lectern in no good deed was a surprise, also found myself thinking did they always fly students in the lion rescue? Weird if I've managed to miss that 10 times but whatever, that section always feels a bit goofy to me but I really bought it this trip.
Don't usually see tours and I was surprised to not have applause on big entrances? The crowd seemed to warm up noticeably when the big hitting numbers came on and that's on the performance of the cast who were brilliant.

Nice to hear the students still fly in that scene. When I saw the show in Bradford in May there must have been an issue with the set as nothing was flown in/out for the top of the set.
Laura Pick ran offstage to grab the broom during Defying Gravity.

It's been a good 10 years+ since I last watched Wicked so the arrival in Liverpool last night for the next few weeks was a great opportunity to revisit it and see of the show is still able to give that wow factor. Having originally booked to watch it next week, a few £30 single seats popped up a few days ago so a last minute trip to the Empire last night was a bit of a no brainer. With the full cast on, this really was a great watch and certainly hit the mark for me as well as the audience based on the very positive reaction from the audience at cast bows. It has been a while since the Empire was full, so it was great to see the majority of the 2.5k seats filled last night and certainly helped in creating a wonderful environment to sit in.
For me this really is a great cast and Laura and Sarah make for a great on stage pairing as Elphaba and Glinda. Fantastic vocals and acting from both the ladies. Thankfully the sound mixing was spot on last night so from my Circle seat, both vocals and orchestra could be heard clearly. Carl man as Fiyero was another standout.
Stephen Schwartz's score is still as great as ever, and those big numbers getting the great reception they thoroughly deserved by the audience. Visually it still looks stunning thanks to some great set design, costumes and lighting. I would agree with previous discussions about the DG moment maybe needing a new look. It looks great but it definitely could look even better with the more modern effects that are now available.

I always forget how compact it feels compared to London. But it works.
Had Casey Al-Shaqsy as Elphaba. Thought she was great. The only downside was due to the speed of the orchestra during Defying Gravity from “so if you care to find me…” to “tell them how I…” she really seemed to cut the end off almost every word. Now not her fault, every time I’ve seen the previous tours the orchestra always seems to be doing their own thing compared to what’s happening on stage.
Was wondering if she was also feeling a little under the weather as Sarah O’Connor mouthed “are you ok?” at the end of For Good. Both ladies are also out of the show this evening according to a friend who booked the evening show.
Sarah O’Connor is possibly the poshest Glinda I have ever seen. And it worked. Her soprano was stunning. She seems to have settled into the role quite well. Loved her during Thank Goodness when every time Morroble spoke she just looked so awkward as if she just wanted the ground to swallow her up at the story of how she met The Wizard.
Understudies for Boq and The Wizard also, who, along with the entire cast weee great.
Definitely felt a lot more fresh compared to the last time I saw it in London earlier this year.

I saw Laura Pick a couple of days ago on Instagram complain she hasn't been able to shift a cold. They seemed to have wanted her well enough for press night last night but I guess she's still under the weather with it. I see Maddison is on for Elphaba tonight. Heard one of her first shows a while back on youtube and didn't  her voice so I'd be interested to hear from your friend how she's settled into it now! The speed of the orchestra is one of the biggest complaints I've heard about the tour. And apparently the last couple of months it's actually slowed down. So if you're saying it still sounds sped up I pity the Elphabas trying to keep up previously. 😂 Looking forward to this in September! Never seen it on tour before. An odd one, but do you know if there's a cast board at the Bord Gais? Only been a couple of times and never noticed if there is. |

The cast board in the Bord Gáis is at the door on the right hand opposite the stairs behind the merch counter that leads to the box office and stalls.
Got an interval update from my friend on my journey home, she isn’t loving or hating Maddison’s Elphaba. She can’t put her finger on what it is but says there’s just something not right, great voice but not for Elphaba. Although she is hard to please.
I’m going back at the end of August with my partner, so I’m hoping Laura is on, but I’d be happy enough with Casey again after today.
