Simon Lipkin would also be great in that role. He'd be an interesting pick

I know it's highly unlikely, but I'd love to see Trevor Nunn direct a new production, in a similar way he did Nicholas Nickleby and Les Mis. Of course this is just a dream scenario and will most likely never happen, seeing how Nunn and Mackintosh's relationship is 'sour' to say the least.

Lucie Jones I can imagine being a good Nancy. Likewise Rachel John, Cassidy Janson and Rachel Tucker (would be fitting in the case of the latter) could sing and act this fantastically, but they may all be outside the casting bracket for this now. Echo the vote for Alex Young too.

The West End doesn’t need a stuffy revival that has been done a million times, it needs new shows to get the theatre audiences salivating again, such as the New Jersey Boys, which is Ain’t too Proud, Mean Girls or Beetlejuice. It is awesome we have Back to the Future and Moulin Rouge to look forward to, as well as Pretty Women and The Prince of Egypt, which had hardly opened.

I'd actually prefer a 5 hour epic Nunn Oliver Twist (not the musical) adaptation with the Monks subplot intact, as you say in the style of Nicholas or some of those other recent epic productions. Would be interesting.

It’s a really terrible show which completely misses the tone of the original movie and wouldn’t last over here. It’s like a cheap Addams Family knock off just with a brilliant set. Such a waster opportunity. I’m not against revivals right now, especially if it means theatre gets up and running again quicker. Oliver!’s had a good break, so no harm in wheeling it out again if it brings audiences back. I really hope we get a suitably dark and menacing Fagin though. Someone mentioned Matt Lucas in a previous post - and I have to disagree completely. Fagin needs an air of threat at all times, even when he’s putting on a a bit of nicety. He just doesn’t work when he’s a camp pantomime character.

I'm all for new writing and then I listen to some of the new cast recordings coming out... Give us decent revials of established and undiscovered classics. Please use imagination, new talent and not copies of the original set design or choreography. And please don't let Lonny Price be anywhere near it.

I don't think he's right at all for it, but what I'm saying is that since Mackintosh has cast him so often in Les Mis, it seems he may be considered. I doubt it, though.

It is awesome we have Back to the Future and Moulin Rouge to look forward to, as well as Pretty Women and The Prince of Egypt, which had hardly opened. I disagree. It needs familiar shows guaranteed to sell - theatre people know and recognise, that can attract an audience and put bums on seats. We need productions that will turn a profit, keep people in stable employment and allow the industry as a whole a chance to recover. Once theatre is allowed to reopen, I’d be very surprised if some of our best actors didn’t return in stunt casted plays too. Names that will put bums on seats in plays that are going to be cheap to revive and stage. I’m looking forward to seeing the shows you’ve listed, but we don’t need everything at once and filling the west end with musical adaptations of popular movies isn’t necessarily the best way to go about it... especially when you considering half the west end was already jukebox musicals/long runners/movie adaptations anyway. I agree. This was exactly my point that I made in my original post. Expect to see a lot of Golden Age musical revivals, a lot of Shakespeare, Noel Coward, Tennessee Williams all with a lot of famous celebrity names attached... a lot of pantos, family shows, etc. It is not the time for producers taking a chance on relatively unknown titles or new shows - plenty of time for that after things get up and running (2038?)

I am currently rewatching Dickensian on iplayer. Anton Lesser is a great Fagin but I doubt he would be up for a musical sadly.
A great actor can do so much with Dickens

If we must have a revival of Oliver. I would think Fagin would be interestingly done by someone from the BAME community. Only thinking this after seeing Paterson Joseph play Scrooge at the Old Vic last year and play it very well, not necessarily saying the role should be played by Paterson, but would be interesting to see someone from the BAME community step up.
Maybe someone like Adrian Lester.

I can also absolutely see (and would applaud) a BAME Nancy, as well as some blind casting of the kids - the Artful Dodger and the other boys have no limitations on their casting anyway. Actually, casting a child (or children) of colour to play Oliver could add some nice undertones to the story what with his mother being disowned by her (white, upper class) family and him subsequently being welcomed back by them.

(Swaby appears on Hey Mr Producer too), and both were superb. And of course Omid Djalili played Fagin during the 2009-11 Drury Lane run.

Ron Moody who played Fagin in the Oscar winning movie was Jewish. I took it for granted that the casting director would not cast BAME actors as children. I took it that was a given. No problems casting Nancy as a BAME actor, it wouldn’t bother me if both were BAME actors. However the role of Fagin is the role, as the role requires excellent acting, as well as singing.

Omid Djalili played Fagin during the last revival taking over from Rowan Atkinson
So it is not that long since the role was played by an actor of colour

Sonia was a fab Nancy, as was Sally Dexter. They really cast it well on it’s first run.

Ruthie Henshall also did a stint as Nancy in the Palladium version.
Another fantastic Nancy was Linzi Hateley, who did a production in 1999 at the Leicester Haymarket Theatre
