I had just seen this on Thursday but ended up getting a return that popped up in the stalls for the show tonight.
This cast is just wonderful and this performance will stay with me for a long while.
Charlie Russell was on tonight (she was off on Thursday) and Jonathan Sayer still off with covid.
Huge crowd at stage door after the show and a lot of children, many of whom got very emotional after meeting the cast. It was really lovely to see. The cast were so lovely.

Jonathan Sayer still off with covid. Huge crowd at stage door after the show I can't help thinking these two points may be related! That is assuming there were also crowds at the stage door a few days earlier in Manchester.

The show’s apparently going to be filmed in the Broadway Playhouse in Chicago. I’m surprised because I assumed they’d be filming it with the current UK Tour (considering the original cast is reprising their roles there for a limited time)

So they were indeed up to something. Rehearsing/ getting back up to speed for the filming but have thrown us all by filming it in the states.

Good news, they were great recently, though if just filming a live performance I’d have thought their comedy would land more with a British audience.
Mention of strict covid protocols in US theatres is interesting as when I saw them in Manchester there weren’t any, but the cast were still mixing among the audience in the pre-show. At one point I saw Nancy tape a girl to her seat, and Rob and Henry Shields confiscated a man’s popcorn (and ate some of it.)

I'm don't think he appeared in the second tour week at all, which is when I guess is when they must have originally planned to film.

I wonder why they don't just film at the Duchess? I understood that filming theatre in the US was more expensive than doing so in the UK, plus there'll be the cost of flying the cast out there.

Yeah, seems a strange thing to do. I can imagine the Duchess might be a bit tight to film in, perhaps?
But they would always have done this with the original cast - there's virtually no point in doing it with others when this cast are so well established with the show and, without a doubt (and for obvious reasons), the strongest cast the show has had.
Doing it in Chicago feels odd though. There must be a reason for it.

This is such fantastic news. It deserves to be preserved with the original cast. Not that I have anything against the cast in it now, but it really isn't the same, the original cast has magical chemistry, Charlie Russell in particular steals the show.

Well I certainly didn't see them filming in the US! Usually US productions come over here to be filmed!
Absolutely thrilled we will get a capture of the original cast, it is so deserved. If any original cast needs to be preserved it's this one.
I'm assuming their recent stint was to dust off any cobwebs and warm up for the filming then, I hope the US audience are receptive like the British audiences for this show. How exciting!

Did anyone here go to the filming? I find it interesting that the official Mischief socials as well as cast's own accounts are keeping it quite quiet...

I’m not a fan of Mischief Theatres stuff (I like them as performers and wanted to love it a lot, but imo the material feels very juvenile. I love slapstick and silly humour but a lot of Mischief’s stuff feels extremely obvious)
What I do find funny is that in so many negative audience reviews there’s this common thought that the show employs paid plants to laugh very loudly to get the audience laughing. And I really want to know whether that’s true, or if it’s ever been something a show has done. I also find it funny how many negative reviews point out the ushers seem very used to people leaving at the interval - apparently it really is marmite!

Yes - it is absolutely true that they use shills. I didn’t like the TV show, so never bothered with their stage shows. I find that chap who does the gurning at the audience absolutely insufferable. Interestingly it (used to, at least) be one of the few productions with an Actor/ASM. These two paragraphs may be related. I couldn’t possibly comment. It just seems very obvious humour, as you pointed out. Really not my cup of tea - I couldn’t stand “One Man, Two Guv’nors” either, which I find very similar in tone.

My dislike of their stuff irritates me so much because on paper it’s something I should love - meta theatre comedy with lots of slapstick and silliness, but when I watched their televised stuff it all felt so painfully obvious and overplayed. I’ve seen performers from mischief shows in other things and absolutely loved them - they get very good performers for their shows, but it’s the material and direction that makes it painful for me (like the mugging, pauses for effect, and predictable outcomes for gags. It’s all very ‘first thing that pops into your head as for what could go wrong.) I’m actually fascinated by why I dislike it, because so many people adore it - it feels like they’re seeing a different show to me!

It’s just a bit too Genie from the Les Dennis episode of “Extras” for me. Pause, wait for laughss, gurn at the audience. The mugging, the “corpsing”, it’s trying so, so hard. I love farce, Ayckbourn’s plays really tickle me, Frayn’s “Noises Off” is still hilarious after umpteen viewings. So, like you, I should be onboard with Mischief.

Has there been any news about the filmed version being broadcast/available for download? It's odd that Mischief almost seemed to treat it as a secret that it was being filmed and as far as I know, haven't promoted any kind of release.

I understand it was more a case of "we need to film this whilst we are all young and fit enough to put our bodies through the punishment" etc. It'll come out eventually, but not for a good while.

Having re-watched the Festive Goes Wrong specials on BBC1 this week, is there any news on Mischief's upcoming work? I know they've done a couple of things at the Fringe and recently Good Luck, Studio. There were rumours of Spies Goes Wrong pre covid...

Eventually saw this last night - really enjoyed it.
However, the front of house staff (or perhaps the theatre's late comer policy) are ridiculous! We had approximately 20 people turn up late over a course of 30 minutes. I had to stand up 6 times in the first 30 minutes of act 1 and had to suffer listening to arguments between the FoH staff and the late patrons over the quality of their seats. After the 6th time of getting up, the people behind us (who had to get up more than us!) told the FoH staff that this was ridiculous. At this point, we'd had about 5 minutes where we were up and down - genuinely had no idea what was happening on stage. FoH said there is no cut off point, so they had to let all late people in - not even at an appropriate time!
Then it became apparent that all of the late people were in a group together, spread around the theatre (some sort of American university trip). So they then, MID PERFORMANCE, were playing musical chairs to sit with their friends. Again, FoH said "they paid for all of the tickets, so we can't stop them moving" - EVEN THOUGH IT WAS HAPPENING 30 MINUTES INTO THE PERFORMANCE! Utter madness.
I came back from the toilet at the interval to find that someone was sitting in my seat as they all wanted to sit together!
Genuinely shocking.

Try that with Brian Cox’s Long Day’s Journey, I dare you…..

Took a trip to see this today - £20 for the box at the back of the circle is excellent value, especially to be able to move my arms and legs in my seat!
Anyway, the show was excellent and I have a great admiration for the opportunities this provides a lot of new actors - a number of the cast and understudies were in their first West End show, and that is commendable. Excellent performances from all, and raucously funny - it's very easy to see how this is coming up to ten years next autumn.

Now booking until May 2025, with a new cast announced… Name that stands out there for me is Daniel Fraser. He was actually in The Mousetrap a couple of years ago as Giles Ralston. Makes me wonder if anyone else has appeared in both? I guess if anyone knows it’ll be Dawnstar ?
