Oh parsley, heaven bless you. You're like our very own little Ebenezer Scrooge. Or the Bhoot of Diwali Yet to Come.

Unlike Whatsonstage and the Daily Telegraph I wholeheartedly agree with the forum (and wickedgrin) with this production
An adaptation of A Christmas Carol that could be simplistic yet wildly imaginative with a cast driving the heart of the story along. Faithful to the book yet captured the spirit in ways I haven’t seen in previous adaptations
Like wickedgrin I thought a good deal of action was facing towards the majority of the audience at the front. In fact its only really in the second act when the in-the-round staging comes into its own.
The onstage seats aren't bad but only try them at a low/discounted price

It was opening night last night. I think Jack Thorne and Rhys Ifans may be related and simply share their hair out between them. Not particularly equally I must say.

3 and 4 stars It’s hardly the hit of the year And unlikely to help the shift tickets at £125 Best to take the forum with a sack of salt sometimes 😂😂😂 Guess so if you value more what the critics think.

Critics? Bah Humbug: this humble theatre-goer had the best night out in the theatre for a very long time.

There have been a couple of mentions, but could someone please let me know which seats are available on Get Into London Theatre for the reduced prices? I'm only able to buy in the public sale for it, so would be appreciated. And if you're feeling ultra generous, the same info for The Birthday Party

It's in the GILT offers at £20 for the Lillian Bayliss and £40 for D/C, stalls (keep getting row Q) stage stalls (row m or p). Those stage stalls -I was M 52, absolutely great view! I'm still seeing M stage stalls and Q stalls for £40, and the £20 for Lillian Bayliss - depends what night you are looking at. Birthday Party is Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday. Thursdays from 25th January. Sorry, seeing quite a few sold out in the different price ranges (£65 to £40, £45 to £30 especially, £29.50 to £20 is the other option).

Interesting interview on Front Row this evening with Jack Thorne, David Edgar and Deborah McAndrew (who's done the new version for Hull Truck) discussing their differing approaches to adapting the story.

Thank you for all the positive posts, members; as a result I bit the bullet and saw this last night. I was already in London with a free evening and knew that as my route would be without trains for about 10 days soon, it might be my best chance. The best I could do was a stage stalls seat via Todaytix but at least the price came down slightly during the day as I baulked at the initial amount.
I did struggle to stay awake (not because the show - which is what it was in this version - wasn't engaging; quite the opposite) but enjoyed what I did see, and the free mince pie was a nice touch. I've never been able to read any Dickens, possibly both scarred by seeing tv adaptations as a child, when I hated the misery and cruelty depicted, and not liking his style. And I've never warmed to Rhys Ifans either. But this was accessible Dickens, albeit with huge liberties taken with the language and story.
Good thing I wasn't dozing off during the audience participation (minor for those who are concerned about this type of thing and some may not even consider it such), though the fact that the running time was under 2-and-a-half hours was certainly welcome. As with the Dylan/McPherson play/musical, the music really made this for me.

Really looking forward to this tomorrow afternoon... Just come across this rather beautifully put together piece on the very first drawings of Ebenezer Scrooge, as described by Dickens himself, on BBC news online. (I like the scroll down feature which enlarges each illustration!) www.bbc.co.uk/news/resources/idt-sh/the_first_scrooge

I love this theatre, but I loved it even more today when I was welcomed with warm mince pies, satsumas and the smell of cinnamon! Loved the transformation of the auditorium, and the simple staging on the walkways through the stalls, Loved the use of harsh cold light and warm lanterns, Loved the chimes and use of handbells throughout, Loved the liberties they’d taken with the text, Loved the different take on the ghosts, each with their wheels, Loved the haunting use of the Coventry Carol (gut-wrenching…) Loved the uplifting See Amid The Winter’s Snow (never a favourite of mine, but I’ll hear- and ‘see’- it very differently from now on…) Loved Scrooge’s transfiguration (Oh how I loved it!) Loved the way they made us cry, Loved the way they made us laugh (some of the comedy just ridiculous at times!) Loved the message, loud and clear, Loved the all performances but particularly Rhys Evans, I even loved the modern day urchins in the Upper Circle lobbing unwanted bits of mince pie onto us down below! I… loved it!
If you have only one treat in the theatre this Christmas, it’s got to be this!

Totally agree with all the positive comments on this one...absolutely loved it, I was up and teary eyed with the rest of them.
Never been to the Old Vic before and one thing I did notice is that this place smells nasty! Like pubs used to just after the smoking ban. I wonder if it is a result of the 'effect' they use which ends up getting the carpets a bit damp. If that's the case, the place is going to absolutely honk come January, they should stock up on febreeze now...

that this place smells nasty! I saw the second preview and it didn't smell then so must be the effect of the 'effect'!

Really wanted to love this, and I did to start with but was very fed up with the way the story was mucked about with in the second half - only a good idea if you can improve on the original. But I did think Rhys was great!

Really wanted to love this, and I did to start with but was very fed up with the way the story was mucked about with in the second half - only a good idea if you can improve on the original. But I did think Rhys was great! Saw this yesterday. Absolutely loved this. Thought they did a great job with one of the greatest stories ever written in the English language.
Loved the 'in the round' setting, the staging, the lighting and superbly acted. A play that made full use of the Old Vic auditorium. If this doesn't leave with a big smile on your face and a lovely warm glow in your belly there is something wrong with you.
Best thing I have seen since van Hove's A View From a Bridge. Been a theatre watcher for eight years now and don't give out my standing ovation very often, oh yes they need to be earnt. But this became my fourth standing ovation given in my theatre going career. I adored my trip to the theatre yesterday

Has anybody sat in row X (the front side rows) up in the Lilian Baylis circle for this production? I'm just trying to figure out how restricted the view is for this particular staging before buying tickets as a surprise for a family member. Thanks in advance!

Lovely interview on Today on Radio 4 this morning with the four children who play Tiny Tim. It was on about 8:20 if you want to find it! Thank you for this... A chance to hear some of the lines and music again from this marvellous production, and a beautiful insight into these little actors’ minds. Out of the mouths of babes...

Saw this today at the 1pm matinee...fabulous! Made me cry at one point and I thought Rhys Ifans was spectacular in the part...you really couldn't take your eyes off him. Loved the mince pies, loved the lighting, loved the music, loved the updating of the tale....it got a standing ovation from me! I was in seat U31...behind a pillar, stalls for £21 and was a bargain...you are slightly higher up than the closer stalls seats and splendid leg room! Recommended! Merry Christmas!
