Has a Christmas 2020 return been confirmed then? Not as far as I'm aware. Apologies if my post misled you. In my heart I hope it returns. I think they usually confirm their schedule in the summer. That's alright! I was just curious to see if it does return a fourth year as it feels very rare for a festive (or even at other times of the year) show to return more than 2 years in a row. So when they announced a third year I was pleasantly surprised (last April/May I recall), but I also think if there is going to be one that keeps coming back it should be this as it is an incredibly special show that's full of heart and joy and everything you want at Christmas. |

And it's over. For another ten months at least. A lovely final performance by the best ensemble so far and (in my view) an award-winning Scrooge in Paterson Joseph. What a fine, fine actor. Keeping up my tradition of going to the last night of this. Superb performance by Paterson Joseph, clearly emotional during that final applause. Lots of children in the audience - the excitement when the feast comes together, the snow falls - it really is an enchanting piece of theatre. |

Looks like my words earlier in the thread were prophetic. What a joyous show to look forward to after this lockdown nonsense has hopefully passed on by. Bring it on... the Old Vic can have my money for this show and Local Hero any day, any week, any year. This news has lifted my spirits and tempered my disappointment at the postponement of Local Hero.

I reckon they must have decided to postpone Into The Woods to give it more time for development, so bringing back A Christmas Carol must have been an easy choice.
Personally, as interested to see as Into the Woods as I was, I'm glad to see it back as I've previously said it's such a joyous show. Also having watched the NTLive broadcasts recently, I wonder if they'll consider doing it for this, should it be it's last return. I think it would look great on camera!

Well that's a pity, barely any Sondheim for Sondheim's 90th (sighs). But yes, I'd love to see A Christmas Carol filmed and it's great for the festive season. Maybe they could get a starry cast too?

I had heard that Into The Woods was scheduled for the very start of 2021, so that suggests that it was always planned to follow A Christmas Carol after the holiday period.

My mind has been mulling it over and I wonder if they might run Local Hero and A Christmas Carol back-to-back, and retain the cast as a company for both... Cast wasn't yet announced but can see role crossovers between the two - Ben Knox/Scrooge, Mac/Bob Cratchit, Stella/Mrs Cratchit Gordon/Fezziwig. Thinking behind this is that if the potential reopening of theatres is somewhat fluid, potentially could rehearse both shows with the same company of actors so that Local Hero could slot in before or after A Christmas Carol with slightly lower overheads for Old Vic plus some form of programme continuity in a period of uncertainty.

Worth checking emails - had a discount offer / access to gen sale a day early in mine today from having booked for the show before.
Booked for the Sat before xmas, will be overly emotional this year I think.

I was so hoping that they'd find a way to make it happen in the theatre after all. It has turned into my favourite Christmas tradition - I must have seen it at least 5 times over the years, and every time I made a friend go see it with me they fell in love with it too.
That said, the fact that it's now livestreamed at least means that I have a chance to make more people watch it and fall in love with it, though I still don't understand the Old Vic's decision to limit tickets when they desperately need money...
I'd already booked a ticket when they first went on sale, which I've now let them swap it for a livestream ticket. Hopefully I'll get lucky with the queue so I can pick up another ticket or two next month.
I'm really curious about the cast now! My dreamcast would be Paterson Joseph returning as Scrooge and Erin Doherty returning as Belle.

The building will be full of staff anyway to keep it staffed for the performers. It seems completely illogical not to even try to have a partial audience. |
