In every Hollywood movie, the guy is always years older the girl, sometimes creepily so. Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta Jones comes to mind. Also, in the stage version at least, that Green make up makes every Elphaba look amazing and the screen version wont be any different.

Harry wouldn’t want to do this, would he? Isn’t it a bit of a thankless role?

The worst age difference example I can think of is the upcoming Napoleon biopic with Joaquin Phoenix as Napoleon, aged 47, and Jodie Comer as Josephine, aged 28, despite Josephine being six years OLDER than Napoleon in real life.

My point still stands even with Vanessa Kirby playing Josephine. She’s 14 years younger than Phoenix but her character is six years older than Phoenix’s character.

Production the film is delayed, possibly for up to 6 months. I wonder if that might have a knock on effect for people already contracted to be in the film.

How have you come about this information? I suppose they have a bit of freedom because they haven’t announced a release date yet. I’d be surprised if Cynth & Aza Graza wouldn’t remain attached for as long as needs be considering how high profile a job it is.

The new studios they are using are not completed yet, parts of it are still being built and parts are being rebuilt to accommodate this production. They were meant to start filiming in June, now pushed back to Sept, if then.

Still surprised by the casting of this, I still think Cynthia is too old. She comes across as so mature and elegant I can't see her at all.

In the many many years that this movie has been spoken about Stephen Schwartz has often said that he has been writing several new songs for the movie which didn’t make much sense to me as I didn’t know how they were going to fit all of this new content into one movie. Well now it’s confirmed that it’s definitely going to be 2.

In some ways this does give me a bit of hope. The current box office track record of musical movies isn’t great. Cats, In the Heights and West Side Story all massively struggled at the box office for a whole variety of reasons. So why would Universal offer up the money needed to make this into 2 movies when they know full well that the story can be told in 1? They must be able to see the potential in the pre production of the movie so hopefully this is shaping up well *fingers crossed*

But they’re only going to make more money if the films are actually successful. It works both ways. They could make more money by splitting it into 2 movies or they could lose more money. Like I said movie musicals have really struggled at the box office and if Wicked Part 1 flops at the box office then heads will roll at Universal. At a time where the movie industry still isn’t making pre pandemic box office numbers and only big blockbuster superhero movies are drawing in audiences, this is quite a bold move from Universal. Of course it’s all about making money but this shows that they have quite a lot of faith that this will indeed be quite successful and won’t be another box office flop.

It's not entirely true that musical movies have struggled, Disney did really well with Aladdin, Beauty and The Lion King and of course we can't forget The Greatest Showman. Wicked is established IP probably more so than Cats was.
