Thought a separate thread should be made for this as I imagine it will be a hot ticket. Lydia Wilson as Blanche, Anjana Vasan as Stella and definitely the biggest draw for most people Paul Mescal as Stanley. Directed by Rebecca Frecknall so I will be intrigued to see what angle this production takes. Running 10th December 2022 to 4th February 2023, and I imagine a West End transfer is already on the cards. almeida.co.uk/whats-on/a-streetcar-named-desire/10-dec-2022-4-feb-2023I have studied the text but never seen it live. I have to say watching Gillian Anderson's Blanche via the NT Youtube channel, that did seem like the definative performance and one that has stayed with me.

National Theatre recently announced that the Young Vic’s NT Live of A Streetcar Named Desire (the one with Gillian Anderson) is leaving the NT at Home streaming service on 3 September. Makes me think, maybe the Almeida version will have its own broadcast too (or maybe when it transfers the West End), or in partnership with NT?
Anyway, excited for Rebecca especially directing another Tennessee Williams adaptation. And Paul Mescal is definitely a draw.

Quite a young/ young looking cast than you usually see in productions of Streetcar.
I do wish they got a bigger name for Blanche. I hope the focus isn’t too much on Stanley since Mescal is the star.
Very excited regardless.

I'm sure some smug people on this forum would be opposed to her being cast in anything in the future.

On the other hand, I can easily see Lydia Wilson be excellent in the role, especially after her last excellent outing with Frecknall.

Very excited regardless. Blanche is her thirties in the play and Lydia Wilson is 38 so she is the right age. Although it is true that normally casting pushes the idea of fading beauty by choosing older actresses.

Sounds great! Hope it won’t be too difficult to get a ticket for those who aren’t members. I remember what a nightmare it was getting Macbeth tickets!

Much as I’d love to see Paul Mescal, I’m really not fussed on Rebecca Frecknell at all.

I was surprised when I googled her, saw pictures and then her age. But yes, you are right. Blanche is in her thirties. I think modern audiences don’t see someone in their thirties as a spinster so an older actor is the typical. Although, Rachel Weisz was in her thirties when she did it at the Donmar.

I prefer an older Blanche. Lia Williams in Dublin was the best I've ever seen.

The Rob Ashford production at the Donmar is still one of my theatre going highlights. Rachel Weisz was captivating and Elliot Cowen had such an intense masculine stage presence

I saw Glenn Close play it at NT in 2002 (with Iain Glen) when she was 55 and very good she was too.

I saw Claire Bloom play Blanche, at the Piccadilly Theatre, back in the 1970s. She was a terrific Blanche. In the 1990s, I worked with Kim Hunter, the original Stella. Since Kim had worked with two great Blanches (Jessica Tandy on stage and Vivian Leigh on screen), I asked her who was the best Blanche. "Uta Hagen," she replied. Uta had played Blanche on Broadway during Tandy's vacation; and later on tour with Anthony Quinn as Stanley.

We've had too many Menageries and some dud Cats so I'm hoping for a decent Streetcar...it's probably my all-time favourite play.

Got a restricted view seat in the stalls, and also another restricted view for Tammy Faye. £35 for two shows is good!

I got restricted views in stalls for both Streetcar and Tammy Faye (I never find the restriction at the Almeida all that bad.) Was 500 something when booking opened and about a half hour wait to be able to book but pretty good availability once I arrived.
