Interesting article about how James Graham has been working with Alan Bleasdale over the last two and a half years to develop a stage adaptation of Bleasdale's legendary TV series. Bleasdale says he's been trying to write stage plays for years, but doesn't have the skill, "But James does". Coming to Liverpool Royal Court in September. The article certainly communicates the warmth between the two creatives! www.theguardian.com/stage/2022/jul/02/go-on-gizza-play-boys-from-the-blackstuff-lives-again-on-stage

Sept next year, alas, not this year. (The original article did suggest this year.)
Tickets on sale from tomorrow.

They must think JG will sell, or does the other Royal Court always put shows on sale 14 months in advance?

This is in my neck of the woods and despite living in the area for 15 years I've never been to the Liverpool Royal Court theatre. With JG attached I'll book for this. As far as I know, I don't think the RC has had such long booking periods for shows.

Thanks for your information samuelwhiskers: have just been sent an email, too. Booked! For those in the know, as you can't choose seats, is it a free-for-all on the day? Thanks.

Despite the fact that this will likely move to London at some point, I booked! Never been to Liverpool so will make a weekend of it

Just home from tonight and it is a pretty good play, not five stars but very entertaining and relatable especially as a working class scouser with most my family on the dole. The stand out is of course Barry Sloane as Yozza Hughes, wow what a performance. That man truly went into the role with more emotion than I’ve ever seen portrayed on stage, just phenomenal throughout. The entire cast were fab as well and the audience was loving it. It will resonate with many of them and as the majority were older (I’m only 21) I’m sure they will have seen the original TV series too. I text my mum a pic of the programme and her reply was literally “giz a job”.
Great night out and I’d 100% recommend a visit. First time myself at the royal court and it’s a nice theatre, however the slowest bar service I’ve ever seen.

A few thoughts on Monday night's visit. Like undeuxtrois , it was my first time at the Liverpool Royal Court and as a venue I really liked it. I've booked for other shows later on in the year after this visit. There was plenty of space across 3 different levels to have a drink and relax pre-show and during the interval. I was sat in the Circle section and had a clear view of the stage despite being near the back of the Circle and with the balcony overhang not causing any issues with seeing the set. The run time on Monday was around 2hr 20 minutes. Programmes were available and cost £4 I seem to remember. As for the show itself, I really enjoyed it. It zipped along nicely pace wise. James Graham has done a good job here in adapting Alan Bleasdale's TV show for the stage. JG captured both the humour and emotional angst of Bleasdale's writing really well. Barry Sloane as Yosser is definitely the stand out with this wonderful cast. There are some real LOL moments when he is on stage. As for the set, you get 2 crane structures either side of the stage with 2 levels with each crane. Other bits of set come in from the side. There is also a screen at the back for projections. From where I was sat, the stage was fully utilised but never seemed cramped. By the end, there was a really positive response from the audience. Rating - 4 stars.

I see it next week, trains permitting. I watched the series once years ago and have dug the DVD out to rewatch once I’ve seen this. Glad to read this has been adapted successfully. Looking forward to seeing both.
Only been to the Royal Court twice before as the usual stuff they do doesn’t look like my kinda thing, but I saw Bleasdale’s Down the Dock Road and Martin McDonagh’s The Lonesome West there. Nice enough place, just wish they had normal seating downstairs.
Extra little level of interest for me in seeing this now as the director Kate Wasserberg is the new AD at my local theatre.

Really enjoyed this. Very good adaptation, not just of the series but the Play for Today that preceded it. That’s a lot of material to edit down into two hours but it felt like it stood on its own as a play rather than just a theatrical version of a greatest hits album. 4 stars.
Only downside for me was the audience. Yes, it’s really funny, “giz a job” is a pretty famous catchphrase, and the scene with “Catholic Priest” nearly brought the house down. But it isn’t a comedy. A lot of laughs at some of the more serious bits, and even a few call outs in quieter moments.

I said under the National thread that I could envisage an immediate West End transfer, given it's such a short run at the NT. A well reviewed sold out run in the Olivier could serve it well.

Also running in Liverpool again from 19 Apr-11 May. I left it too late last time, ticket now booked! It was well worth the watch. I had work colleagues who went to see it near the end of its run and really enjoyed it as well. Great to see a Manchester Liverpool Gets It First play get a London transfer. Well deserved. Hopefully it will get a warm welcome at the NT.

With the Haymarket and Apollo having announced new shows this week, I'm wondering if there's actually anywhere this could move to, if the very short Olivier run is a hit, which I expect it will be. I'd love to see this but the Olivier dates don't really work for me, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed it will transfer somewhere.

The Trafalgar is another option.

It just seems funny that the run is so short.
