DEH was not that fresh by the time it got here and, once the die hard fans had seen it, perhaps there wasn't enough audience to sustain it. Maybe the film version didn't help either. Cinderella was new but not good enough. But where is the next Come From Away? That unexpected story which captures the attention an audience. Just putting these together should be the answer: Come From Away is life-affirming, heart-warming and a show that everyone feels a connection to, because who could ever forget 9/11 and what they were doing that day? DEH is a show about a tedious liar and a heap of teen anxieties that not many adults (the majority of ticket buyers) can identify with. And Cinderella was indeed just not good enough. These lists are forgetting Beetlejuice which had just found its mojo on Broadway before it was ousted and is a very entertaining fun show which I believe is what people need and want right now. And while Hadestown isn't exactly uplifting, it's a very clever smart "grown-up" show with a soundtrack to die for. It MUST come back. And we're still waiting for Groundhog Day too... Beetlejuice and Groundhog Day are hardly new and original properties. Didn't Groundhog Day start in London and I thought Beetlejuice was already on the way over here?

Beetlejuice and Groundhog Day are hardly new and original properties. Why not? Both have brand-new music and have adapted the stories somewhat instead of just slapping the movie on stage 1:1 like Back to the Future has done.

Beetlejuice and Groundhog Day a Beetlejuice and Groundhog Day are hardly new and original properties. Why not? Both have brand-new music and have adapted the stories somewhat instead of just slapping the movie on stage 1:1 like Back to the Future has done. They're still existing pieces being sold off the back of a big name. I don't have a problem with either, I'd like too see Beetlejuice and I enjoyed Groundhog Day...well the first half of it.

Right, I get what you mean, I just think that there's a big difference between a creatively adapted movie with new music and yet another tedious biography jukebox musical like MJ. The truly completely original musicals have always been few and far between anyway - they used to be based on plays or books usually, now more often on movies. I loved Beetlejuice, but didn't get a chance to see Groundhog Day on either side of the pond and I'm endlessly glad I had someone prod me into seeing Hadestown while it was at the National.

Right, I get what you mean, I just think that there's a big difference between a creatively adapted movie with new music and yet another tedious biography jukebox musical like MJ. The truly completely original musicals have always been few and far between anyway - they used to be based on plays or books usually, now more often on movies. I loved Beetlejuice, but didn't get a chance to see Groundhog Day on either side of the pond and I'm endlessly glad I had someone prod me into seeing Hadestown while it was at the National. I don't believe MJ is a 'jukebox' musical. It's more a life story thing with the songs performed as they were released etc. I wasn't fussed on Hadestown at the National. The massive stage swallowed that set. The lead guy was weak, some of the songs felt repetitive etc I do love a lot of the music though, but it definitely needed a few trims chunky trims here and there.

In regards to Mr B's right royal theatre clue, I don't think we can rule out Her Majesty's Theatre as an option. It's a tad smaller than the Neil Simon capacity wise but it could work.

I am just rather fed up with the seemingly neverending round of biographical jukebox shows. I know they are safer bets for producers. But wouldn't it be great to have something new, original and fresh Dear Evan Hansen is closing in October so clearly audiences don't want new, original and fresh. Truthfully, theatre owners want shows that are successful and MJ on Broadway is doing well so it's a no brainer to transfer it to London. The problem with Dear Evan Hansen is that it just isn't that good. I, like many others, were obsessed with the cast album. I sort of knew the story broadly and was really excited by it. I haven't met someone in the same position as me who really loved it and has been to see it again. One of the most disappointing theatre experiences I've ever had!

Those saying this show doesn’t address the “controversies” are wrong. There are a few lines of dialogue where they’re addressed. They’re not dwelled on but it is there.

Both Tina & Cher do the same, tell the story of the artist featuring their songs. All Jukeboxes.

I don't object to jukebox shows as a genre. One of my favourite musicals is Our House and that is because the music serves the story rather than story existing to perform the original songs essentially as concert pieces.
We just seem to be seeing a lot of biographical shows over recent years where the book only seems to exist to get from one hit to the next with just a bit of narrative.

Agreed. Bio-musicals and jukebox musicals are two different things.
Tina, Jersey Boys, Beautiful - Bio-musical.
Priscilla, Moulin Rouge, & Juliet - jukebox.

There are plenty of biographical musicals that use original music. They happen to be about non musical subjects but they are still absolutely biographical:
Hamilton...Barnum...Evita
So I would argue there needs to be two categories of biographical musicals - and one is a biographical jukebox show, the other is a biographical show

Ivano certainly has the moves but the actor playing MJ has to completely embody the man, the way Myles does (and why I think he’s going to win the Tony next week). It’s a HARD role when you have to not only look like MJ but sing, talk and move just like him.
