Went to the third preview of this adaptation, by Kate Mosse, of the Kate Mosse book, which I had not read.
The story concerns mysterious goings on around Chichester in the early 1900s involving secret societies, disappearing women, revenge and taxidermy.
It is all more than a little overwrought and overacted production which got a muted reception last night. The characters are all so stereotypical and played as such that it is difficult to engage with any of them or the story, particularly when parts of the set are falling from the flies!!! There are lots of bangs, crashes and, at one point, a quite effective storm surge sequence, but overall it seems at time like a melodramatic sixth form production of an in house play.
I find KM an acquired taste and perhaps it might have been improved if someone else had adapted her book. Being a local girl CFT seem to adore her and it all smacks of a vanity project all round. Disappointing. 4/10

Thanks for the review, meister. I read the book a little while ago and found it predictable and, as you say, the characters were stereotypical. I decided not to buy a ticket and after reading your review, feel that I made the right decision.

Anyone else seen this? We have tickets for Saturday and are considering whether the journey to Chichester is worth it for a not very well reviewed play - thanks

Well acted atmospheric horror story. Great staging..No ..its not perfect..Narrative gets a bit bogged down.. But plenty to enjoy here. Dont let me sway you but it isn't a lost cause..
