Mama isn't that hard of a sing and they stunt cast that role on Broadway all the time. I mean, Nene Leakes from The Real Housewives of Atlanta and Wendy Williams played that role. Ruthie may have shot her voice but she will still be fierce and better than many who have come before her. I feel like Sarah as Roxie is a boring choice and a *yawn*. They will dumb down the choreography for her for sure. Josephina will be great but I do hope they don't put a black bob wig on her which a cop out and a safe choice. I wonder if they are all contracted for a year? The Weisslers are cheap so probably got 4 month contracts and they will have revolving door like they do. She hasn't. I've no idea where that came from. I heard her in concert last year. It was the opposite of shot. Unshot(?)

She sounded like she smoked 100 a day in Billy Elliott and struggled vocally but was still very good.

I loved her in Billy Elliott - I was just commenting that someone said her voice was shot and I said even if that was the case, Mama isn't a hard sing. We aren't talking Effie White here...

I saw Ruthie in that awful Follies concert and her vocals were frankly alarming. She was better in Billy Elliot, but she has ruined her voice playing soprano roles too high for her for years. A good thing about Chicago is that it has been stunt-cast for so long that at this point no new performer who steps in can be the worst.

I saw her concert tour about 4 years ago and she was in fine voice - no problems. But then I watched the Oliviers and the ladies singing ‘What I did for love’ and she was all over the place. Who knows, but I’m thrilled it’s her!

You can add me to the list of people that didn't get the memo re Ruthie's voice being 'shot.'
So a good cast in the end. Almost tempted to go back and see this - though would wait for night before/dynamic price drop I think.
Personally not heard of the actress playing Roxie. I assume she is MT trained though!?

I'd love them to put back the song 'Mister Ten (?) Per cent' that was cut in the very early days. It's a lively song for an agent and his assistant, I believe, but suddenly introducing a character who did little else probably does not make great dramatic sense. It's a bit like 'Power is a Powerful Thing' from Steel Pier. I've not heard if for ages, but I don't think I'm making it up. Anyone else heard it on one of those 'Lost in Boston' albums.

Was taking to a friend of mine and apparently she’s one of the best people to have ever played Roxie - in his opinion. (she played her at the Garrick and the Adelphi so is an alumni of the show)

She's done quite a bit! www.unitedagents.co.uk/sarah-soetaert

Not a 100% sure but I think I remember her being in the ensemble at the Adelphi, tiny girl with quite a lot of stage presence, very pretty... If she was in the ensemble then she has to be MT trained surely.

She played Roxie at the Cambridge didn’t she? Sure I’ve seen her in Chicago before. She was ok.

...sure. But..why her? I honestly would have loved to see Ruthie as Roxy again. I'm sure she can still do it and whether her voice is shot or not (I think it mostly is..) it sort of doesn't matter because Roxy's singing is not that taxing. Mama is a broad - Ruthie isn't a broad. Ruthie is a hoofer, which is why she's always been perfect for Velma and Roxie.

I saw Sarah Soetaert playing Roxie at the Garrick in 2012 but she did not particularly impress me.

No idea where all this gossip about her voice being ruined had come from. She's not in her 20s now so she's bound to have changed/matured.

Just seen (thanks to facebook!) that I saw Chicago 8 years ago today, with Ruthie as Roxie! Ian Kelsey was Billy Flynn. It may have been 8 years ago but I still remember that it was brilliant!

Had a quick look for tickets and was surprised to see the prices.
Looking in dress, and for the seats I would like they're £150 each, so two tickets are £300, it seems quite a lot. Do people think they will reduce them, or will thy be this high all the time?
Theatres really are inflating their prices.

Not sure if it's been mentioned on here yet or not, but I saw a poster for Chicago at Euston just now, and it was advertising Cuba as 14 weeks only.

Looks like a case of extreme greed bordering on insanity - there's zero excuse for doubling the prices since it went away. It would be worth a reviewing with some interesting casting , but not at £125-150 for a token available film actor, some retreads from its later years, a minimal set, small cast and small band.

Here there's a video of Sarah Soetaert singing "Roxie" on This Morning, from a few years ago

When describing the set in 3 words...what comes to mind is: black, minimal and chipped
I know on Broadway the break even is about 400-500,000 dollars. The break even in the West End will be less because the pay scale is less. Charing 150 pounds for a show that was at TKTS for every performance is chutzpah if you ask me!
