They would have to have a name like Hugh Jackman to sell it. Regardless of how well the original concert sold, it's unlikely to sustain a long run. |

They would have to have a name like Hugh Jackman to sell it. Regardless of how well the original concert sold, it's unlikely to sustain a long run. I don't think the plan is for a long run, just a few weeks, and Bernadette Peters is about as big a name as you can get! This is never going to appeal to a large section of casual theatre audiences who probably have no idea who Sondheim was. I also don't believe Hugh Jackman has done any Sondheim before (I could well be wrong) and everyone who did the gala concert had a Sondheim link which I would think they would want to repeat. |

I'm guessing either The Gielgud as the stage will be the same size as next door or The Noel Coward as Patriots ends in August. It will be in a DMT house and it's likely only The Gielgud, Coward or Wyndhams won't have long runners installed.

I was only using Hugh Jackman as an example of the type of big name they would need. everyone who did the gala concert had a Sondheim link which I would think they would want to repeat. Rob Brydon, Gary Willmott, Petula Clark, Haydn Gwynne. They all had a Sondheim link? How tenuous a link are we talking?
Bernadette Peters is big in theatre circles, but I wouldnt think that carries over to the non die hards who occasionally go to the theatre.

you maybe right regarding Rob Brydon and Gary Wilmot but Petula Clarke has recorded Sondheim songs including Children Will Listen and Haydn Gywnne was in Company, a Donmar reunion concert. But I still stand by the point I made in that Bernadette Peters is a big enough name for a limited run (as is the intention) for the kind of audience who would be attracted to see a Sondheim concert. |

It would have to be a Cameron Theatre so the only one I can think of that would be even vaguely suitable is the Noel Coward.
Unless maybe the Gielgud ? Though I’ve heard a huge play is going in there from summer.

Very interesting article in The Times in with famous people choose their favourite Sondheim songs. It's behind a paywall which is why I've not put a link.
But the article includes a song called Everyone Wants To Be Sondheim (not written by him) which I have never heard before. Its very clever and funny.

It was written by Allan Chapman in the early 90s as a reaction to all the New York songwriters who struggled to find their voices while stuck in Sondheim's shadow. (Things have improved (a bit) in the 21st century.) Amanda's version is the best known and funniest version. Not sure if it's still in her live repertoire though.
