It's not likely to rate that well TBH. Agree. To us theatre fans Sondheim is God but I would doubt most people have even heard of him. They will have heard of some of the performers like Judi Dench,Damian Lewis and Michael Ball but that's about it. I remember in the 80’s* people like Julia Mckenzie and Millicent Martin or Elaine Stritch who I really only recognised from tv sitcoms and sketch shows would turn up on tv singing what seemed like quite “odd” songs that I didn’t recognise as popular music or showtunes as I understood them at the time. Now I realise that they were involved with Sondheim and they had this whole other life going on. Earlier this week I told my team that I’d seen Antonio Banderas in Company in Madrid last month and it was blank faces all round. *When I was in my nappy sucking on a dummy 👶 😀

Didn't they ever watch The Mask of Zorro or Puss in Boots?

Very odd scheduling for one of their supposed seasonal highlights. Would have been much better on the Sunday evening. Ah well, there's always catch-up. I think its scheduling makes sense, high proportion of people who it will appeal to won't be out partying so gives them something to watch on a pretty dead night tv wise

Your colleagues must be more diplomatic than mine, as a woman I work with keeps asking me what I’ve been to see recently and when I tell her she usually replies with something along the lines of “That sounds sh**!”

My colleagues usually ask me if there was anyone famous in a show I have been to see. I usually say "famous to me but not to you". And if its Sondheim I get a total blank.

Unless I missed it, we’ve been slacking! This has been up since December 20th! m.facebook.com/sondheimoldfriends/And website: sondheimoldfriends.com/Limited run from September 2023. I’d heard a rumour it would be the Noel Coward but I guess it could also be Wyndhams or Gielgud (depending on mockingbird)

I wonder what they mean by 'A great big Broadway show' Sondheim musicals are not what i think of when i hear 'a big Broadway show' It’s a quote from the end of the Follies song Broadway Baby: Someday, maybe, If I stick it long enough, I may get to strut my stuff Working for a nice man Like a Ziegfeld or a Weismann In a great big Broadway show! I suppose it sounds better than ‘cobbled together from several Broadway shows (and the odd flop.)’ Just a bit more slightly misleading West End marketing? Surely they can’t be hinting at a Broadway announcement because they’re promoting the show being on BBC2 and therefore aimed at a UK audience.

The expression from Follies of "a great big Broadway show" merely refers to a style of production that people historically associate with Broadway: larger orchestra, higher production values, more star power, et al.

It’s a quote from the end of the Follies song Broadway Baby: How did I miss that? Of course it is! I am obviously tired and am going to bed and give myself a good talking to. Bad Bobbie! Still, to the average Joe it's making a big claim as to what it will be like. Depending on the cast, and i'm assuming there will be a few names in there to help sell it, it will be a cheap production to put on.
OT - Tammy Faye would be good in the Albery.

I might be wrong but I think the song list has been lifted from the insert we got at the end of the concert with the songs. Again might be wrong (probably am) but I don't remember Daniel Evans opening the show I thought we went straight into Cam Mackintosh and Julia Mckenzie.

Daniel does the opening to SITPWG via a voiceover before JM comes on stage.

I was probably so excited at seeing Julia Mackenzie walk on to the stage that my mind blanked out the first bit.

I remember the audience having a meltdown - the first of many! Think it was only topped when Bernadette turned around in the hood.

I really hope we get some of the audience reaction and ovations so that people can see the effect it had on us.
