I wonder if the public will be expecting a name? I doubt it, the movie is the "name" really. If it doesn't sell though I can imagine them putting a name comedian in later down the line. |

The Broadway production last night announced its closing in 2 weeks. The Manchester run is still confirmed, but it doesn't forecast much hope if the Broadway version hasn't survived.

Yes, Tony nominations day is usually followed by closing notices for those that didn't fare well. Doubtfire only got one nod - for lead actor. I expect the Manchester version will be heavily reworked as a result. |

The Broadway production last night announced its closing in 2 weeks. The Manchester run is still confirmed, but it doesn't forecast much hope if the Broadway version hasn't survived. I don’t think the producers are too worried. There’s been many a show that hasn’t done well on Broadway but has been successful over here and vice versa. |

They don't close for the disappointment for the lack of nominations, but because Tony nods and potential wins were their last hope of bolstering sales that have been poor for weeks |

It doesn't affect all shows. Something like Plaza Suite got snubbed but is selling well enough so it won't matter plus it's a limited run but being nominated and winning can make a huge difference, Kinky Boots got a boost from winning over Matilda back in 2013.

The Tonys are more than just an awards show for New York, they're a huge marketing opportunity and boost sales in shows that haven't grabbed major public attention yet.
Reviews work the same way over there a lot of the time. The New York Times review especially can make or break the success of a smaller show.

Oh, and sometimes if reviews are particularly poor, a show can open and close so fast it practically creates a vacuum.

I think having grosses published probably have a small effect as well since you cannot hide you're not doing well whereas elsewhere like in London, a show could limp along without anyone knowing how it is fairing financially. |

Sonia Friedman mentioned that she's glad that grosses aren't published here because it can skew perceptions. Her example was The Norman Conquests which was critically acclaimed and won awards but didn't quite recoup all of its initial costs by the end of the run which in the eyes of the trades, it was a flop. |

Also remember shows are much cheaper to stage here than Broadway. They're also doing a limited run at Manchester - so they can budget for that. They'll also (hopefully) look at what didn't work on Broadway and make edits for the UK production.

Could it also not just transfer to another theatre before doing so? Thereby feeing up The Savoy.

Pretty woman will do really well in tour I’m excited for Mrs Doubtfire was planning on seeing it in NYC a trip I had booked for October 2020 but we know what happened. So I’m chuffed it’s coming over here :-)
