Why does it need 6 weeks of Previews? Unless it's a typo.

Just booked for a Saturday night in June. Top price is currently £87.50, though premium seats don't seem to be on sale yet.

That's Priscilla, Tootsie, Kinky Boots and To Wong Foo out then. I support trans rights but this isn't the right show to target. ...and every pantomime dame. I think it is pretty shabby to complain that this show makes fun of or somehow abuses trans rights. It has a story, a very specific reason for the cross dressing and has no ‘political’ agenda whatsoever.

The tweeter also said they hadn't actually seen the show.
So the possibility that the character and the audience might grow and learn through the course of the performance is completely ignored.

The movie wasn't even a case of "laughing at a man in a dress" exactly anyway. The comedy came from the fact that Robin Williams was playing an elderly Scottish nanny. It was the accent, the mannerisms, the inappropriate behaviour. He wasn't a man who "decided to put on a dress so we all laughed at him".
I'm really unsure how the existence of this show even relates to the trans community, and I say that as someone who supports the trans community and has spoken supportively of them in the past on this very board.
I think there are certain people on twitter who elect themselves as the "voice" of the group of people they belong to, whether everyone else within that group agrees with them or not.

I find it bizarre that for the last several days many theatre “influencers” and profiles have been showing off their cakes and dressing gowns. Teasing the announcement. And now the announcements out they’re all denouncing the show as controversial, problematic and damaging.

Free swag is not provided under condition that effusive praise be returned. It's provided to get people talking about the show, which they are. Check the bloggers thread in General chat.

Yes but they have the choice over wether or not they show off the free stuff. If they feel so strongly about the negative aspects this show might have then why even mention it at all. I’ve just taken a look at one theatre twitter account where they showed pictures of the cake and picture of themselves in the dressing gown. In total there’s about 6 tweets from them teasing this announcement. And yet the announcement comes and they call the show inappropriate and damaging. Yet I can scroll down and see them happily wearing the dressing gown emblazoned with the shows logo.

If we're talking about ATD, I find the recent posts a bit disingenuous if I'm honest. Feels a bit like has wanted to quickly jump on a bandwagon (that doesn't actually exist) to be sure to be seen on the 'right' side of things. Perhaps i'm just extra cynical. But it comes across an awful lot like he's hedging his bets/covering his bases/insert your own expression here.

Its a weird situation. These people seem to be agreeing that there is "probably" no content in the show specifically against the trans community (which as someone who saw the Manchester run. I was worried about this and there definitely wasn't.) The jokes don't rely on the "look at the man. He's in a dress" style of humour. The audience I saw it with were actually incredibly supportive and respectful.
I understand why the trans community might be worried but its all about how the audience interpert the show and how this COULD reflect badly on the trans community, which shouldn't be at the fault of the show. It should be the fault on those people who recieve it that way, which seems incredibly hard to do considering the content of the show.

The thing about Mrs Doubtfire, it's not a man who's trans, cross dressing or a drag act. It's a disguise and a very elaborate one at that.

Tbh the majority of the discussion right now just seems to be about the tropes, pop-culture memory of the film, and the general assumption of what the show is rather than any actual issues the show has.
The line between what is transphobic, what is drag and what is a disguise (and which direction any humour is pointed) is an interesting discussion and an important one for modern day stories. But the idea that any piece of media with a cis man dress as a woman should be considered inherantly transphobic on face value seems a bit unnuanced imo.
Not that the worry is completely unfounded, transphobes have been using ‘man in a dress’ to mock trans women for decades. But right now the consensus that it’s offensive just seems to be based around an assumption that it’s kicking down to trans people rather than the actual content of the show

It’s Mrs Doubtfire, it’s probably not that deep!

It's also not as if this is a brand new musical in terms of story. It's literally based off of a highly successful and classic 90s movie so even if you have never seen the movie, it's very easy to find to educate yourself.
If anything the shows biggest hurdle is no robin Williams, that's certainly the issue I've heard from people who have seen that this is coming. It could never match the movie.

Aladdin worked without Robin Williams on stage but then the Genie is very different on stage than in the animated film.

All the respect to the great Robin Williams, but Gabriel Vick brings so much to this role and will not disappoint on that front!

They adapted to help avoid inevitable comparisons.

All the respect to the great Robin Williams, but Gabriel Vick brings so much to this role and will not disappoint on that front! I've been following some of the Twitter discussion re the fear of a damaging elision between 'man dresses as a woman to get what he wants' and people who are transgender. That led me to watch a few clips of the original film (which I've never seen in full). There's some interesting footage on YouTube where they're screen testing Robin Williams' costume/make-up. Williams speaks in character (no Scottish accent yet) just chatting to studio hands - and being surprisingly non zany. It's sincere and rather real, in voice and stance. So much better than what he did in the film - the clips always put me off watching it. However, it was pretty safe I guess - it was Robin Williams in a dress; how Mrs D convinced his wife and kids, Lord knows. Of course in story world they're the only people in the world who don't know Robin Williams' shtick; but I can't get past it. Very pleased for Gabriel Vick having this high profile role, and I heard (on here no doubt) that he was very good in Manchester.

Now on general sale at the Shaftesbury. Book direct for lowest prices! Maximum is £87.50, lowest £25.00 back of the Grand Circle.
Front row of the stalls, where I've already booked two for early June, is selling fast as that's priced £55-£60 compared to £87.50 for the next ten rows. Slightly high stage but not too bad.

Hello. Does anyone knows how to get preview tickets for the show in London? Or aren't there any previews?
