So clearly not an adaptation of the hairdressing TV show with Amanda Holden then.

Lots of people in the audience crying tonight and a rousing standing ovation. Does seem to have been overlooked by lots of people and it is probably the most enlightening play I've seen at The Maria

I saw the matinee of this - it's harrowing, but fascinating. The two young actresses, Tsion Habte and Adelayo Adedayo are amazing - funny, touching brave - and I loved the set, especially the final image. The ending is devastating.

Lots of people in the audience crying tonight and a rousing standing ovation. Does seem to have been overlooked by lots of people and it is probably the most enlightening play I've seen at The Maria I was crying too, and my companion was crying as well, it's such a powerful production! Not what I expected though. I thought I'd come out an expert on female circumcission, but the truth is, I'm none the wiser. What is cut, how much, what sexual function is destroyed, why it's so much worse than male circumcision, which is routine everywhere? I just don't know. . . The play is basically two monologues from two Somalian Muslim teenage girls, who meet, and form an instinctive liking for one another. Sparks fly, and hearts melt, when they engage. . . The writing is phenomenal: it's immediate, it's sensitive, it evokes all the senses, it's insightful, the dialogue is exceptional in it's authenticity and in it's ability to quickly define the characters so vividly that you fall in love with both of them. The acting from Tsion Habte, playing the tentative, softly spoken, sensitive Iqra and Adelayo Adedayo, playing the secretly insecure, yet feisty and friendly Muna is through-the-roof brilliant! It may not teach you much about female circumcision, but crikey, will it make you feel something about it! Powerful theatre! 4 and a half stars

She talks about the sense of betrayal and the long-lasting effects on her life.

That broke my heart. Perfect follow-up to "Cuttin it." Mariya Karimjee is so honest and so brave. How absolutely horrifying! Her story is like a well-structured play too. The twist of the Grandmother's reveal at the end. Wow!

It may not teach you much about female circumcision, but crikey, will it make you feel something about it! Powerful theatre! 4 and a half stars Male circumcision is a purposeful targeted procedure to remove the foreskin for religious, medical/hygiene or cosmetic purposes The first and third are rarely routinely done via the NHS route There are some potential complications and of course the appearance is changed! But on the whole it's a standard procedure and deemed a surgical undertaking It does not affect sexual function adversely (some men find it improves it) and does not affect urination FGM is a culture specific mutilation of the female genitalia and nothing to do with religion at all It should NOT be called female circumcision as there is no medical role or health need being met The act can vary but usually involves excising the clitoris and inner labia But often they mutilate the external labia The haphazard way it is done can result in damage to the urethra leading to urinary incontinence After it has been done the remaining area is sewn up to allow urination and menstruation Of course often the latter cannot occur properly so victims get recurrent infections and pain The play did allude to this at the end and a few times throughout It is all about gender inequality and exerting power over women What I think is really amazing about this play Is that it celebrates the diversity of the U.K. Whilst tackling head on the difficult issue that various cultures have bought with them to this country practices which are illegal and abhorrent to us FGM goes on like this in secret in the UK Believe it

Having caught this I simply want to echo what others have said about both the play and the performances. Two excellent performances in an important new play.

Like bellboard27 I can only agree with the reviews on this thread. Thanks to those who wrote about it - your feedback convinced me to go and I was so pleased I did. The topic of FGM is one I'm reasonably familiar with from my professional life and this play dealt with it so well. Such sensitive, mature, yet raw, performances combined with carefully crafted writing that knew when to hold it's punches. I do hope that this production is filmed, preferably for TV broadcast; it needs to have a wider audience.
