Surprised I couldn't find a thread on this already. A musical written by the people who wrote Rocky Horror, and sharing a lot of creatives with the recent productions of Shock Treatment and The Toxic Avenger. It is going into the studio, and the seating plan looks down right bizarre, with the table seats having an "audience participation warning" as well. Does anyone know of any ticket offers for this? Given it hasn't even gone into rehearsals yet, I doubt there are any. It is a VERY ambitious project for the space, so can't see them discounting. |

One of the funniest shows I've seen.
A tongue in cheek American Detective mystery.
Thoroughly enjoyed the score too.

Blimey, so that is two cast members, director, musical director, lighting designer and choreographer all from The Toxic Avenger? Maybe this gang will be the theatre version of the Carry On films.

I saw this last night and was a bit disappointed. It wasn't quite what I was expecting. It was quite slow and not nearly as funny as I'd hoped. Saying that, the two cast members from the Toxic Avenger were every bit as good as I remember them. Marc Pickering is hilarious. As is Hannah Grover, but she's also a great singer. I have decided she should be in all the musicals from now on. All of them.

Thank you. Yikes, I was hoping it would be closer to 2 hours or less, since they are showing the doors for the 20:30 shows opening at 19:45. I've booked a 17:00 ticket, and thought I'd be able to run to the Royal Court for Unreachable at 19:30, but that may not be possible.

Taking a punt on this tonight as today tix are doing 15 quid tickets for today and tomorrow, which combined with a £10 off referral code (like my one: OHJRA haha... ha) means it is only costing me a fiver. So about the price of a small glass of win at the St James bar then.

I rather enjoyed this. I think, story wise, it needs work. But the songs are pretty good (music wise if not always with the lyrics), with a great 5 piece band, particularly the penultimate number, a very hardworking cast and a great set given the tiny venue. A regular glass of white wine was over a fiver, meaning I spent more in booze than on my ticket. No where near as offensive as some reviews want you to belive. It is obviously stylised pulp fiction (hence the accusations of misogyny) and there are just a couple of blue numbers, and a burlesque routine (well it is called The Stripper!). 3 1/2 stars for me.

I really liked Mark Pickering in Toxic Avenger so was thinking about going to see this but haven't heard great things. Worth a look?

Saw this tonight with two friends. All really had a good time. Would definitely recommend. I think enjoyment is dependent on seating so try and get as near to stage as possible - we had club seats C 1,2,and 3 which were fantastic- right in the action. A little audience participation but quite minimal. All the actor were on top form. A bottle or two of wine helps you get into the club atmosphere. Nothing offensive at all about the production.

I loved this and wrote a review www.londontheatredirect.com/post/847/The-Stripper-At-St-James-Theatre-a-fabulous-musical-noir-with-lots-of-camp-and-sleaze-thrown-in.aspxI think you need to be familiar with Benji Sperring's production of Shock Treatment, where Mateo Oxley sat on my lap and kissed me on the forehead (was Toxic Avenger so hands on) to not be completely freaked out by all flirting the cast do with the audience, for example Sebastien Torkia as Al Wheeler made a beeline for me and my cleavage as soon as he could  and I often ended up with his hat and coat throughout the show. It is very fun but I completely understand the complaints about its misogynistic tone BUT it is set in 1960s and was first produced in 1982 so it needs to be seen of being of its time rather than now. It is still a fun night and there some really good numbers and choreography for such a tiny space. |
