I saw Melanie C in concert only last month and her ticket were £35. Same with Jessie Ware. It's only artists performing at Arena level upwards that command tickets in the £75+ range... He is currently playing arenas which makes it all the more refreshing. You could pay thirty pound and be at the very front. For many arena gigs now to be at the front you'd need to buy a ridiculously over priced vip package. Very true!

The moaning about Jessie has moved to the Oliver 22 Prince Edward thread. #cancelled This show is old hat now, in fairness. The stars have done their contracts, the prices remain(!). Imagine paying £250 for two people you've never heard of compared to two Oscar nominated actors who are hot property in 2022!!??. Nobody in their right mind would be booking at this stage at those prices. Cheaper seats now? Brilliant! Guess why? Because THE STARS ARE GONE. This is the home stretch, without an astounding casting coup. I wonder if Cumming would do it for the right fee? This thread will drift over the next few months talking exclusively about ticket prices, then the show will be gone within 18 months. As will all of the paid shills. I think someone mentioned on this thread before that the show will need to run for 5 years to recoup the costs of the theatre renovations. Given it’s being produced by Underbelly, it wouldn’t surprise me to see one-nighters put into the space before long to add additional revenue. This show ain’t going anywhere soon.

I’m pretty sure they said it has to completely sell out at the prices the had day one, for five years to recoup.
“Mrs. Dench, how do you feel about doing Sally again for a few weeks…?”

Average ticket price in 2019 according to SOLT was £56. 8 shows a week, 52 weeks a year, 5 years. 56x600x8x52x5=£70million Assume half for running costs, are we saying it cost £35million in capital to put on?

I have no idea. I’m going off of the statements made by the production.

I'm going as a very last minute ticket this evening. Have been told I will be sitting on a table and have heard there is audience involvement...oh oh!

Ah, ok. I suppose I thought (and still do) that implies pricing at the time that was printed. There’s no way for them to calculate in lower ticket prices when coming up with that figure.

Don't worry, I sat at one of those tables and the audience involvement is minimal and is no way compulsory. Only a few people are involved so you are safe if you won't want to. You might get a call to your phone on your table during the interval but that's just a bit of fun. And the view from those seats is brilliant.

Call me a cynic, but that's PR talk for 'please come and see our shiny new show - it's like nothing you've seen before and don't moan about the prices'. Recouping on an investment is different from covering costs. It suggests a healthy interest rate is built in and they'd be crazy if they think they can keep the original ticket prices for a five year run. I'm sure they conveniently factored in a generous return on investment and reduced ticket prices and not the revenue from the bar or programmes. But if it is going to take anything along those lines to justify the investment, then it means they know they can use the refurbishments for other shows. I'm sure there will come a time when the venue is used for one off Sunday gigs for appropriately expensive singers.

I can report that the view from the table seats was excellent. I was lucky to be treated to it by my friend and found the immersive element excellent. Would have been nice to be surrounded in these seats with younger more enthusiastic members of the audience rather than the wealthy white elderly.
I was happily surprised by the show and felt that it zipped along nicely considering the long first half.
Fra Fee's vocals were strong in the first 'Tomorrow belongs to me' and I don't Care Much' and his acting chops were more shown off in act two. Amy Lennox also great and reminded me of Emma Stone when I saw this in NYC.
A few nice touches that I enjoyed: The Charleston choreography in 'Don't Tell Mama' and the little soldiers on the revolve.

I saw this last night, but only from the very cheap seats (back corner of the Upper Level - the view is far more restricted than where I sat previously for the same price, two rows nearer the front). It is a nice private corner though, with room to the side and you can lean forward without blocking anyone's view.
They no longer give you a sticker for your phone (this would have been useful to deal with the young guy a row in front but out of contact distance who kept turning his screen on and certainly grabbed a few short video clips). They do still give you a wooden coin to exchange for a drink.
The new cast is very strong, particularly Fra Fee who sings much better than Eddie Redmayne. They've also made some small changes to various scenes, particularly the final one, which works much better (although still misses the powerful close of some other productions). Amy Lennox is very good too. You can tell just how accomplished a singer she is when you compare her perfect Maybe This Time to her club scenes, where you get the Sally who is having to push through vocally.
A few covers on last night, most notably Andre Refig as Herr Schultz. There were a few empty prime seats, including at the front of the Dress Circle, so I'm hoping there might be some opportunities for me to this cast again from a better seat (but not with some of the current pricing).

Yes, I noticed that when I looked on ATG out of curiousity about 6pm - certainly most of the front row of the dress (on the original side, if that makes sense) was available but even 90 mins before curtain up they were asking £150 and £120 for them. Wonder if they’d have done a standby rate at the Box Office if asked?!

re. all this speculation about a 5 year run. The first West End production (at the Palace) starring Judi Dench ran for 6 months. It was due to extend with Elizabeth Seal taking over as Sally Bowles but towards the end of Judi's run there was a very small advance and the producers pulled the show when JD left and Liz S never opened. So that production did just over 200 performances (the original Broadway run was over the 1,000 mark). I know the Kenwright transfer was recast and extended but, on the whole, this show has never been big box office in London. Thanks to the movie I suspect it now also has the expectation that it will only work with a name to match Liza Minnelli (even half a century since its release). It will be interesting to see how this latest interpretation will survive.

I was there Tuesday night too, speaking to friends it seems they have a new way of getting people in offering a "quick route" or a "longer interesting one" I took the latter and thats the route you go through the old stage door, into the basement bar and get your free drink. I believe the quick route you get given your drink token instead. I was in the Upper circle B1 and the view is absolutely fine, I don't think there's a difference in lower or higher numbers, only thing you miss is seeing AJC singing in Marriage which was a bummer as that was one of my fave bits, even if I couldnt see her! While its a long show it did zip along we were out about 10:20pm I think. I'll list in spoiler below the rest just in case: {Spoiler - click to view} The theatre renovation is incredibly cool, the budget just to pay the preshow actors, the complete overhall of everything, from foyers, to having it in the round now and understate with all the things coming up from the floor. I do think however that this renovation and immersion does the heavy lifting as to why it was so well received. I was expecting a completely new exciting thrilling version but it felt akin to the '98 and Broadway studio 54 version. I didn't really like the ending didn't think it packed a punch, thought our more recent touring production was more impactful this one felt like a mixed metaphor; and I liked the idea of the confetti falling for the smashed window but that was more dramatic than the ending. I loved the gorilla suit and huge kudos to the actor in it amazing! Fra felt VERY separate from the show, and personally and no disrespect but it just didn't feel like an above-the-title performance. It was very noticeable that you could lift the emcee out of the show and not miss much (I know his songs are more commentary on the themes happening so it does add depth but without a strong presence, point of view, and pull, it was just odd and lacklustre.) It was a nice, clean, performance. Which I guess was in keeping since it did feel like quite a clean, sanitised version of cabaret. Amy fared better but I think direction didn't help her not fall into the pitfall of Sally; is she a good singer or not? Her speak singing sections were awkward because the song tempos weren't quick enough. Her voice was cracking when she let it out and she was very likeable and you could see why Cliff would be drawn to her. Fräulein Schneider and Fräulein Kost were stand outs, i liked the choreography, why the actual emcee doesn't lead the audience interaction bits before act 2 baffled me, would have given us a chance to connect with the character? !

Good point about the Emcee leading the act 2 preshow. In the Mendez (Studio 54 Version) Alan Cumming danced with several members of the audience on stage before the kick line etc which led nicely into the second half.

I’ve just been watching Death on the Nile… what about Emma Mackey from Sex Education as Sally Bowles? There are rumors that she’s leaving Sex Ed after season 3…Fans speculate on this because she hardly promoted season 3 in her socmed and there are worries that she may want to leave the show to pursue a film career. Well, who knows. I don’t know if season 4 started filming already. I don’t know about Emma’s stage history, but she may follow the footsteps of co-star Aimee Lou Wood who did really well on stage for Uncle Vanya in 2020 (Aimee just got nominated for Ian Charleson Award), this time Emma will try her hand in a musical.

Detour, but I only realised at the very end of s2:ep8 of Bridgerton that THAT was where I had seen Kate Sharma before! Was Simone Ashley one of Rubys bitchy coven in Sex Education?

(no) Would you LIKE some?!?!"

Emma Mackey would be terrific I'm sure. I just don't know if she would help to fill the theatre much though. She would be a big pull for the younger crowd but all of the expensive table seats around me were filled with much older audience members. Not sure how many of the Sex Education fanbase are shelling out £100+++ for tickets.
