So I’m a bit late to the party on this one… I went to see Cabaret last night, and I’d been avoiding reading too much on here, and also the reviews, because I didn’t want to know too much in advance about the production.
Jessie was on, as were (I think) all the main names. And I’m pretty sure I saw Maggie Gyllenhaal (who directed Jessie in The Lost Daughter) in the foyer.
A few thoughts in no particular order…
God, it was sluggish - we didn’t break for the interval until 9.15pm. I really thought it needed a lot more zip. Not helped by getting everyone to speak very s-l-o-w-l-y like they’re all on Mogadon. But I suppose that’s what happens if you’re going for a highly stylised, detached vibe. In the second half I found myself looking at my watch, and I never do that.
I thought Eddie R had a lovely singing voice. Not sure about the hyper-stylised way he’d been directed to perform, but I did like his transformation in the second half.
I’m a massive Jessie Buckley fan, but the way she was directed to act the part didn’t work for me at all. Though she sounded great on some numbers.
So, the title number. WTF. What have they got against that song that they decided to (IMHO!) sabotage one of the great numbers in musical theatre? The way she’d been instructed to sing it, the way it was staged, the costume choice… Brave and provocative is one way of putting it, I suppose. I won’t say what words I would employ. When I got home and read the national media reviews, many of them seemed to be raving about the way the title number was staged, so maybe it really is just me. God, am I getting old and turning into some old buffer?
Maybe I’d have felt differently if I’d been sitting one one of the megabucks seats downstairs. We were in the upper circle in the £30 seats. Great view - it felt reasonably close to the stage, though high! And, with a free drink included (eg a bottle of beer or a schnapps or a soft drink), great value.

Such a shame Jessie isn't even doing her last two-show day. It's safe to say that she won't do musical theatre again any time soon. It's amazing for Emily, though, that she got to have sow many shows as Sally and got to be seen by so many (and "important") people. I hope her future is as bright as she deserves.

Given that their run in the show will be over, and given Jessie’s frailty, will these two be joining the cast at the Olivier’s to perform?

As fair as that may or may not be.

I am so happy for Emily to have had this platform.

Jessie’s performance schedule really has some of you hot under the collar. Must have spent some serious money on those tickets to see Emily go on as Sally.

I paid 45 quid for a table seat because I am deaf in one ear. Emily was astonishingly good. But I was still annoyed, and remain annoyed, about Jessie’s horrible and unprofessional attendance.

Have deleted this as I didn't realise I had quoted from a private account. Really sorry. Posts quoting Alec’s original post have also been removed.

Honestly the view of that she's just not turning up for the lols is...utterly baffling No one thinks she’s not turning up for the “lol’s”. Clearly you must do given your previous post calling her unprofessional! Unless you seriously think being ill or having vocal issues is unprofessional? No-one would willingly miss their last day in a show, so clearly she has vocal problems or is otherwise ill.

I would imagine it's vocal issues. A lot of high-emotion shouting during some of those numbers and scenes.
It's unfortunate, but if a performer has to rest their voice, they have to I guess.

It is not unprofessional to be ill, and attitudes like yours only set workers' rights back into the Dark Ages.
